Sadbh’s update – February 25 2016

Sadbh had her pre-op appointment with Dr. Inglis today and we were all excited and nervous.

We discussed how Sadbh often struggles to breathe, especially when she is tired or upset, and how she has dealt with colds since she has been trach free.

He was satisfied with Sadbh’s progress and gave us the green light to have her stoma closed up surgically.

She is scheduled for surgery on March 7th and she will stay in overnight for observation.

While we are delighted that Sadbh’s stoma will soon be closed up and that she will be able to lead a more normal life, we are still very aware that she has a restricted airway that will limit her in participating in activities where she over exerts herself.
The procedure that has allowed her to be trach free has also damaged her voice and now she has a soft whispery voice and she has to work hard to be heard.

Sadbh’s update – February 10 2016

Today marked Sadbh’s six-month anniversary of being trach free. What a difference these past six months have been compared to previously when she needed the trach to be able to breathe.
She’s been able to go to school where she is doing great in her academic and social skills. She does not require the constant medical attention and Katie and I no longer have to carry her two emergency bags everywhere Sadbh goes. Both these bags weigh 35 lbs. combined.

Sadbh’s next appointment with Dr. Inglis is in a couple of weeks and we hope to find out if he is satisfied with her progress enough to close up the stoma in her neck.

Despite all this progress, Sadbh often has a tough time breathing and her voice is a lot quieter than it was prior to the last laser cordotomy where they cut a notch in her vocal cord.

Once her stoma is closed up she will be able to learn how to swim and will be able to partake in a lot more activities that having an open airway prevents her from.

Sadbh’s update – February 5 2016

Sadbh slept great all night and was back in action and well enough to go to school today.
She had a wonderful day at school and was so happy when I picked her up afterwards.

It was a long day but by bedtime she was ready to hit the sack. She wanted me to snuggle up with her and both of us were fast asleep in no time at all.

Sadbh’s update – February 4 2016

Sadbh had a much better night but we decided to keep her home from school just to be on the safe side.

To make her day fun I brought her to the Museum of History and Industry. She had a great time and did not want to leave.

It was a long day for Sadbh and she did not slow down once.
By bedtime she was worn out and it did not take long for her to go to sleep.

I’m hoping that she has another good night and that she can return to school in the morning.

Sadbh’s update – February 3 2016

Sadbh had another fever during the night so we gave her Ibuprofen at 4am. She settled back down for two more hours before Cillian woke us all up.

We kept her home from school today and overall she had a good day. Her temperature was slightly high but she was comfortable and in a very good mood.

Her temperature started to spike in the early evening and she was looking very flushed.
We gave her another dose of Ibuprofen just before she headed up to bed and she was fast asleep in no time at all.

We’ve scheduled an appointment with the doctor for tomorrow morning if she has another spike in her temperature tonight.

Wayne, Katie, Sadbh and Cillian
