Sadbh’s update – March 31st 2014

Sadbh was flipping and flopping all over her bed and did not settle down until 3. By then she was sleeping at the foot of the bed.
She woke up very happy shortly after 7 and was ready to take on the day.

Sadbh and I had a fantastic day but despite the gorgeous weather we were housebound waiting for a technician to come by and check on her humidifier compressor.
For some reason or other Sadbh thought it would be a great idea to strip off all her clothes and run around the house in the nude for an hour or so. At one point she asked me, quite seriously “can you take your pants off for a minute?” I was doubled over with laughter.

Sadbh could not wait for Sophia to get home from school and was thrilled when she heard the keys in the front door.
Uncle Neil stopped by for a cup of tea and when Sadbh saw him she greeted him with “how’s it going geezer?”

The fun and games continued throughout the evening and after dinner we got a very tired little girl ready for trach care. Everything went well and Sadbh headed off to bed immediately afterwards.

We submitted two appeals to our insurance company a few weeks ago after their peer-to-peer denial with Dr. Inglis. Unfortunately both appeals were declined so we need to submit another appeal to try and push the approval through.

Sadbh’s update – March 30th 2014

Sadbh slept great and woke up well rested and happy to see Mommy.
The weather was much better today so after trach care we decided to go to the zoo.

The zoo is so much better when the sun is shining and it seems most of the animals felt the same way. We meet up with Clodagh and Cormac and Sadbh was so excited when she heard that they were coming and she started calling their names as we walked through the zoo.

It was a great day and by the time we got home Sadbh was well and truly pooped. This did not stop her from slowing down and both she and Sophia had a fun evening playing in the basement and making a huge mess.

When it came time for bed Sadbh was playing the drama queen. She is so used to sleeping with the lights on, for the nurses, so she insisted on having at least two lights on in the room.

Eventually she dozed off but it took long enough that Katie was exhausted.

Sadbh’s update – March 29th 2014

Sadbh slept like a rock and woke up bright and early just after Danielle left.
She was over the moon to see Mommy and got to get in some serious snuggles first thing.

We had a busy morning as we had to get our taxes done. Sophia was very helpful and played with Sadbh while we got ready.

Katie and I managed to get trach care done, with Sadbh’s help of course. As soon as we finished up we loaded up the car and headed out.
The weather was miserable so we headed to a roller skating rink for some fun. Sadbh did not get a chance to skate but Sophia and I managed to entertain her for a while, especially when I fell a few times.

Sadbh had a fun evening and got to dress up her new teddy bear with hair clips and hair bands. Rose, her teddy bear got quite the doing over.

Sadbh finally fell asleep moments before Danielle’s shift started.

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – March 28th 2014

Sadbh slept great and was so excited to see Sophia when she got up this morning. Unfortunately for Sadbh, Sophia was running out to school so she had to wait until she got home to play.

After breakfast and a nebulizer Ali-Baba and Hayato came over to hang out. Sadbh was thrilled to see them both and got busy playing with Hayato once we got trach care out of the way. Trach care went well and Hayato helped out again by holding my phone so Sadbh could watch her cartoons.

Later when Sophia arrived home Sadbh got to chat with her mother and brother in Germany.
Sadbh could not wait for Sophia to finish her call and as soon as her call ended the fun and games started. Sadbh was delighted to have Sophia back.

Sadbh got to watch a movie after dinner this evening and by the time it ended she was ready for bed. We had a wonderful day and she was out like a light as soon as her head hit her little pillow.

Sadbh’s update – March 27th 2014

Sadbh and I had a much better day today. It started off shaky when she first woke up while trying to give her a nebulizer. She soon calmed down and the rest of the morning was great.

Mommy came home early from work so we could bring Sadbh to her acupuncture appointment. We decided to research acupuncture to see if this would help and thankfully Sadbh went along with it.
It was a needle free session and everything went really well. The specialist wants to train both Katie and I so we can treat Sadbh by ourselves at home.

Ali-Baba, Kirk and Hayato met us when we arrived home. Sadbh was thrilled to see everyone and could not wait to play with Hayato.
We gave her a bath and got trach care underway with the help of Hayato who kept Sadbh entertained.

As soon as we finished up we headed up to the neighborhood cinema to watch an hour or so of cartoons. Sadbh sat next to her cousin and only moved to the edge of her seat when the two people sitting in front of her obstructed her view. She was still able to see the show and she had a fantastic time.

Sadbh was very tired when she arrived home and did not want Hayato to leave.

I contacted a couple of medical supply companies today but unfortunately they are unable to work with since they are not covered by Sadbh’s medical insurance. We are still researching our options but in the meantime I had to provide the current company with my credit card information just to get our next order shipped out.
I did get them to agree on a whole bunch of requirements so fingers crossed we will get the order processed without any problems.

Sadbh’s update – March 26th 2014

Sadbh woke up in a great mood after a restful night sleep.
She had a fun morning and we got to get creative with play dough and later on with shaving foam. Sadbh had a brilliant time and made quite the mess.

After lunch we headed off up to Trader Joe’s for a couple of things and of course Sadbh was on the hunt for Kangaroo Joey. It did not take long before she found him and off she went to get her reward. The woman behind the counter fell in love with Sadbh and offered her a second lollipop, however I had to decline the kind offer, otherwise Sadbh would expect two each time and I can’t imagine what all that sugar would do to her teeth.

Our afternoon was up and down and both Sadbh and I knocked heads a number of times. It was very exhausting.
Katie had a very trying day on the phone with the insurance company and with what we had hoped to be our new medical supply company. Unfortunately, our insurance company does not cover the medical supply company so we have to continue the search.

We took care of trach care at bedtime and just as she was getting ready to go to bed Sadbh came out and gave me a big hug, a kiss and told me that she loved me. We both agreed to do our best to make sure that tomorrow will be a better day.

All the best,

Sadbh’s update – March 25th 2014

Sadbh had another great night under the watchful eye of Helen. She did not need to be suctioned throughout the night but her upper airway sounded a little goopy so I gave her a saline nebulizer and a suction after breakfast.

Sadbh and I had a much quieter day today and we were house bound since the weather was bad.
Nevertheless, we had a wonderful day and Sadbh had a lot of fun.

During lunch Sadbh got to chat with Nana and Granddad in New Zealand and she told them how excited she was that they were coming to visit next week. My dad texted a photo of my nephew Fionn and Sadbh fell in love with him. I cannot wait for them to meet, however I’m not sure when that will happen.

She received an early birthday present from her grandfather in San Francisco. Poppy sent Sadbh a teddy bear the same size as her and she fell in love with it as soon as she found it. She named the bear Rose and played with her all evening.

Katie and I managed trach care at bedtime and unfortunately Sadbh did not want to cooperate. Everything started off well but as soon as I had removed her trach ties she got very upset and would not allow us to get near her neck. It created a very stressful and scary situation and in the end I had to hold her down to keep her from knocking her trach out.
By the time we finished up we were all wiped out. It took a little persuasion to get Sadbh off to sleep.

We were not feeling very confident with Kysha and neither Katie nor I felt that she would be able to take care of Sadbh if Sadbh got sick.
We chatted with Helen last night to see if she would be available to pick up the night shift during the week and thankfully she is available for the next couple of months.

Sadbh’s update – March 24th 2014

Kysha is off for a few nights and thankfully Helen was available to cover for her.
Sadbh had a great night sleep and was wiped out from the fun day with her cousins. Helen tried capping Sadbh’s trach but unfortunately Sadbh was too quick and stopped her from doing it.

Sadbh was so excited when she woke up and could not wait to wake up her cousins.
The morning was full of fun and Sadbh was in heaven. Her two cousins, Hayato and Kaito are really good with Sadbh and she was so in love.

She was having so much fun that she forgot to go to the bathroom. I tried to persuade her to go when she stopped in her tracks and said “I had an accident”. And then she said with a huge grin on her face, “no I didn’t”. What a kidder!

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end and the two boys had to leave. Sadbh was not pleased but she looked forward to playing with Sophia and Maxi. Sadbh did not realize that the two girls were about to head off to Vancouver and when it came time for them to leave Sadbh was in denial. We walked them to the bus stop and as soon as they boarded the bus Sadbh got very upset. It was a heart breaking moment to see her so sad and she actually got angry for a few moments.

With a little bit of extra effort I was able to cheer her up and soon we were heading off to Nora’s woods to play hide and seek.
Sadbh had a fun time and ran laps around the woods. I’ve never seen her move so fast through the woods and she seemed to know each and every trail by heart.

We had a wonderful evening and when it came time for bed she was wiped out.
Katie and I managed trach care while Sadbh watched Kipper on the iPhone and within minutes of jumping into bed she was out like a light.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – March 23rd 2014

Sadbh had a much better night sleep and woke up not long after Danielle left. Katie had taken over from Danielle and Sadbh was very happy to see her.

Sophia’s friend, Maxi, was visiting from Vancouver and we all headed over to Easy Street in West Seattle for breakfast. It was a beautiful day so we took a walk through the farmers market while we waited for our table.

After breakfast we headed down to Alki beach for a walk and Sadbh got to throw stones into the water. She had a lot of fun and she filled her pockets with small rocks before leaving the beach.

Sadbh’s cousins came up from Portland for a quick visit and Sadbh could not wait for their arrival. Katie and I managed trach care and our timing was perfect as they arrived just as we finished up.

Sadbh was over the moon to see her cousins and as you could imagine the rest of the evening was spent having so much fun. Ali-Baba and Kirk even joined in.

After dinner Sadbh got stuck into a nice big slice of chocolate cake. It did not take long for the sugar to kick in and soon Sadbh was like the Tasmanian devil running around the house.

It was a riot and the excitement in the house with all the cousins and visitors reached fever pitch at bedtime.

Sadbh tried to sing her favorite night time song, “So long, farewell” but was so delirious and she could not remember the words. Needless to say she was fast asleep in no time.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – March 22nd 2014

Sadbh had a very restless night and tossed and turned all night.
She woke up in a good mood and was very happy to see Mommy.

Katie had yoga this morning so Sadbh and I had breakfast and as soon as her belly was filled it was time for the fun and games to start.

Trach care went well today and afterwards the three of us jumped into bed to watch Thomas the tank engine. Sadbh was quite happy at first but she started to get cranky as the time went on.

We decided to head out for a bite to eat and unfortunately we chose the wrong shoes for Sadbh. She threw a huge fit and by the time we got to the end of the driveway tensions were at an all time high.
After a quick shoe change we were all happy and off on our walk to Café Presse.

Sadbh had a much better evening and insisted on walking most of the way there and back. She was fascinated with the cherry blossoms on our way home.
She was very tired when we arrived home and it did not take long before she was fast asleep.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – March 21st 2014

Sadbh woke up in a fantastic mood and it only got better when Mommy joined us in her room.
She initially did not want Katie to leave for work but we were both having so much fun that she was fine with it when the time came.

Later in the morning Sadbh and I headed up to Trader Joes to get a few things and Sadbh insisted on wearing her new sandals. She looked lovely, despite wearing sandals and socks.

As soon as we arrived at Trader Joes we had to go on the hunt for Kangaroo Joey. Sadbh went to the spot where she and Ali-Baba found him yesterday, however he was nowhere to be found.
It did not matter as we were both determined and after a few laps of the store we found him in his mothers pouch high up on a pole close to the front door.
Sadbh was delighted with herself and made a b-line to get her reward.

Sadbh’s friends Clodagh and Cormac came by for dinner this evening and Sadbh could not wait for their arrival. They had a brilliant evening taking turns driving Sadbh’s cars around and after dinner they hung out watching cartoons together.
It was very late when Sadbh went to bed and she was out cold as soon as her head hit her pillow.

Sadbh’s update – March 20th 2014

Sadbh had her final music class today and she had a lot of fun. She kept her distance from the group for a portion of the class but all in all she had a great time and really enjoyed herself.

On the way home we stopped off at Trader Joes for the shopping and Sadbh and Ali-Baba went on the hunt for Kangaroo Joey who was hidden somewhere discrete in the store. Ali-Baba was obviously on a mission and it did not take long before she put her resources into action and both she and Sadbh found Joey. Sadbh received a lollipop as a reward.
While this was all well and good for Ali-Baba, I know that we will have to search for Joey every time we go to Trader Joes from here on out.

Ali-Baba and I gave her a nice bath as soon as we arrived home and we got trach care done as soon as she was dried off and in fresh clothes.

I was sure that Sadbh had worked up a huge appetite after such an exciting morning however she fought me tooth and nail and would not eat.

Her evening was spent playing with Sophia and they both had a lot of fun. She was thrilled to see Mommy come home and when it came time for dinner she put up a fight.
Katie was successful in getting Sadbh to eat and afterwards she gave me a huge kiss, told me that she was sorry and then asked for her lollipop.

Bedtime was quick and she was out within minutes. Exhausted after a packed day.

We gave up on trying to get the February medical supply order filled and on
Tuesday I submitted the order for March. We received a response immediately that this order would ship by the 28th however we would need to provide them with a credit card number before they could fulfill the order. This despite the fact that Sadbh is covered by three health insurance companies.
After a few phone calls we are looking to change companies and hope to have our next medical supply order filled as soon as possible. It all depends on if we can get her primary insurance company to accept this new company.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – March 19th 2014

Kysha could not work last night but Danielle was able to fill in and look over Sadbh.
Sadbh woke just before 8 and was in a very good mood. We had a great morning and even though she said she was not hungry she had a big appetite and ate all of her breakfast.

Lunch was a different matter. Sadbh had no interest in eating and it took over an hour for her to eat the food on her plate. It was extremely frustrating for both of us.

Once she was done the rest of the day was much better however she was not so keen to eat when it came time for dinner.

By bedtime Sadbh was exhausted and fell asleep as we were finishing up trach care.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – March 18th 2014

Sadbh spent an hour or so just hanging out quietly in her cot this morning. She was in a great mood and was delighted when Mommy popped her head in the door.

Sophia had a late start for school due to exams so Sadbh got some play time in before she had to get serious about her own school work.

During quiet time Sadbh got to talk with Granddad and Nana who are visiting my sister in New Zealand. She was very excited when she realized they were on the phone and she would not give up the phone.

We both had a fun day and got to read many books and the fun only got better when Sophia got home from school.

As soon as Katie arrived home we got stuck into trach care. Both Katie and I had plans to head downtown to celebrate our friend Dee’s birthday so Jenna agreed to look after Sadbh until Danielle took over at ten.
Sadbh was delighted to see Jenna and could not stop talking throughout dinner.
Afterwards Sadbh, Jenna and Sophia got busy baking chocolate chip cookies and after that they watched a movie before bedtime.

Sadbh was pooped after her long day and dropped off to sleep without any problem.

All the best,

Sadbh’s update – March 17th 2014

Sadbh slept in until 8 and woke up in a great mood.
Despite it being St. Patrick’s day Sadbh would not wear green, only pink, and lots of it. I did manage to get her to wear some Irish socks.

We had a fun day and even got to take her trike out for a ride. Unfortunately she took a sharp turn and went flying off but she escaped with a tiny scratch on her thumb.

Katie and I managed trach care just before Sadbh’s bedtime and even though she was very tired, it took Katie quite some time to get Sadbh off to sleep.

Sadbh’s update – March 16th 2014

Sadbh slept great and woke up at 8. I took over from Danielle earlier and when Sadbh woke up she was in a playful mood.
The weather was terrible so we had a very lazy morning. This worked well for Sadbh as she got to spend the morning playing and having fun.

After Katie and I managed trach care we decided to go to the MOHAI museum. Sadbh fell asleep just as we were parking the car and she napped for almost an hour.
She was very cranky when she woke up but soon she was enjoying all the interesting exhibits at the museum.

Sadbh and Sophia spent the rest of the evening playing together and by bedtime Sadbh was the only one in the house with any energy left. I have no idea where she gets it from.

Sadbh’s update – March 15th 2014

Sadbh had a good night and woke up shortly after Mommy took over from Danielle. As expected she was delighted to see Mommy and they both got a huge snuggle in before she finally got up.

We had a very busy day planned but first she got to open some very nice gifts from her friends Conor and Aibhin’s Nana and Granddad. For St. Patrick’s day she got a lovely green t-shirt with “Who needs luck when you are this cute” written on it. So true.
She was so proud of herself with all the great clothes and would not take off her Minnie Mouse wellies.

As soon as we got trach care out of the way we loaded up the car and headed downtown to check out the St. Patrick’s Day parade. By now Sadbh was fast asleep and despite the loud music there was no waking her up. Eventually when she did wake up she had no idea where she was and she was kind of freaked out.
Later on we took the monorail up to the Seattle center to check out the Irish festivities going on there. Sadbh was thrilled to ride the monorail.

In the evening we headed to the Key Arena to watch the Rat City Roller derby. Sadbh was keen at first but as soon as the event kicked off Sadbh had enough and wanted to go home. She braved an hour of it before we loaded up and headed home. On the way out we bumped into my friend Jessica. Jessica used to compete in the Rat City Roller Derby and Sadbh was very excited to meet her.

Sadbh was delirious by the time we got home so bedtime was quite easy and she was fast asleep in no time at all.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – March 14th 2014

Sadbh’s nurse came by but since her son was in hospital we told her to take the night off. I spent the night with Sadbh and she did well. Unfortunately I missed clearing her humidifier hose around 6am and it ended up dumping condensed water all over her shoulder and chest. Thankfully it missed her trach.
When she woke up she reached out and grabbed me by the beard and she gave a out a giggle. She was in a fantastic mood and it only got better when Mommy came in to give her a snuggle.

Ali-Baba stopped by later in the morning to help with trach care and everything went until my phone froze and she could not watch anymore TV. I was afraid that she would get upset but she impressed Ali-Baba and I by going along with it and allowing us to finish trach care.

Once we were done with trach care it was time for tea with Ali-Baba and both ladies had a marvelous time together.

When Sophia got home from school we headed off out for a quick walk in the sunshine. Sadbh had to bring her lawn mower, which really slowed down our progress.
She had a great time nevertheless.

Our neighbors Pat, Anna and Charlie came over for dinner tonight and Sadbh turned into the biggest flirt. She has the biggest crush on Charlie and insisted on rearranging the table settings to have Charlie sitting next to her.
When she was done eating she ran into her room and came out running with one of her pajamas for Charlie to wear. It was so funny but also quite worrisome. I think I’m going to have to have a chat with her in the morning about this.

After dinner Sadbh, Sophia and Charlie watched Finding Nemo, again, and by the time the movie ended Sadbh was wrecked tired. She was already in her pajamas so it did not take long before she was fast asleep in her bed.

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – March 13th 2014

Keysha could not work last night so Katie spent the night with Sadbh. Sadbh was a little restless and cried in her sleep a couple of times. She was lucky to have Mommy there next to her holding her hand.

Sadbh was so happy to see Mommy next to her cot when she woke up.
She was in for a treat today as Mommy was going to the music class with her. It was also her friend Clodagh’s birthday so the fun was not about to end any time soon.

Music class was fun but half way through it seemed to overwhelm Sadbh and she started to look tired.

As soon as we arrived home Ali-Baba and I gave Sadbh a bath and got her ready for trach care. She did great and not long afterwards we both said good bye to Ali-Baba and headed out for a walk to meet my friend Marcus.

Later in the evening we headed over to Clodagh to wish her happy birthday. Sadbh had been chomping at the bit to see Clodagh all day and to wish her happy birthday. She was very excited when the candles were lit and had to be held back from trying to blow them out.

It was a fun day and Sadbh had a blast.

Sadbh’s update – March 12th 2014

Sadbh was quite restless for the first part of the night but eventually she calmed down. She was in a very deep sleep when I took over at 6 and she managed to sleep in until shortly after 8.

It was a beautiful day but it started off quite foggy. Sadbh was so excited when she looked out the window to see all the fog.
After breakfast we spent an hour or so painting and learning how to draw circles, squares and triangles.

In the early afternoon we headed off out for a walk to get some groceries and like yesterday Sadbh took her sweet time. It was nice to be out of the house and to get some nice warm fresh air and sun.

When it came time for trach care Sadbh was beyond tired. All the walking today wore her out but she would not settle down so we had to pull up Bob the builder on Netflix and thankfully that did the trick.

I actually had a very frustrating day dealing with our medical supply company. Sadbh’s monthly medical supply list averages at 25 different items and is submitted by the 22nd of each month for that same month.
The order I placed for February shipped late and after 30 e-mails back and forth the company has still not shipped the full list of items.
Today I learn that “due to a policy change” I will need to supply my credit card number for items that our insurance companies will not cover, keep in mind we have three insurance companies covering Sadbh’s needs now.
When I asked for a list of the items that are covered by insurance the rep at the medical supply company mentioned that he does not have that list and that I will need to follow up with my insurance companies. I never thought that chasing my tail would be so much fun.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – March 11th 2014

Sadbh slept like a log and woke up around half past seven. She only wanted Mommy and was delighted when Katie took over ten minutes later.

Sadbh’s nurse supervisor, Caity, came by to recertify Sadbh. Sadbh was delighted to see her and wanted to show off some of her toys. Especially Kipper and her horses.

It was a beautiful day so after Sadbh had a quick snack we headed off up to Capitol Hill for a walk. Sadbh took her time so our walk was very leisurely.
Since the sun was shining Sadbh wore her sunglasses but she insisted on wearing her winter jacket. At one point I was starting to swelter so I took my jacket off.  Sadbh did not like this one bit and got very cranky until I put by jacket back on again.

On the way home we stopped off for an gelato and when asked what flavor she wanted Sadbh asked for “pink ice cream”. Unfortunately she did not really care much for her strawberry sorbet and consequently devoured my gelato instead.

The rest of Sadbh’s evening was spent playing with Sophia and having a very fun time.
After dinner it was time for a bath, which she really enjoyed and as soon as she was dried off and in her pajamas she fell fast asleep instantly.

Katie and I were able to manage trach care very quickly since Sadbh was asleep and thankfully she did not budge once throughout.

Sadbh’s update – March 10th 2014

Sadbh woke up just before 7 after a restful night sleep.

We had an early appointment this morning and Sadbh was as good as gold. I was very surprised how well behaved she was and she did not fuss once.

The rest of her morning was spent playing and hanging out. The weather was dreadful so we did not get a chance to go for a walk.

In the afternoon she got to hang out with Sophia for a while and they both had a great time.
As soon as Mommy arrived home we got busy with trach care. It took a bit of convincing to get Sadbh to participate but soon we were under way and before she knew what was going on we were finished.

Sadbh had taken a nap earlier in the day so by bedtime she was not in the mood to go to sleep. It took a long time before she finally settled down.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.
