Sadbh’s update – February 27, 2015

Sadbh was up bright and early after a good night sleep. I popped in just before seven with Cillian in my arms and both Sadbh and Jirapa were thrilled when they saw him.

As Sadbh is getting closer to starting school, this morning we had an appointment with the Seattle school district to assess Sadbh’s needs and to determine what services she will require.
The assessment consisted of a series of tests in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and psychology.
She was a superstar and was not intimidated by having to sit alone with each of the specialists as they took turns testing her. Later she asked us if she could go back.
She passed each of the tests with flying colors and actually scored well ahead of her age development on most.
As expected, she does not require any assistance for any other needs other than her trach.
Because of this she does not qualify for pre-school services from the school district. They advised us to follow up with the school district this time next year to prepare for enrollment in kindergarten.
They did feel that her voice quality could possibly be strengthened and that we should work with her ENT specialist on the appropriate next steps.

After Sadbh’s appointment we had a doctors appointment for Cillian.
Since the attention was now on Cillian Sadbh was fairly bored by this so she managed to snag Katie’s phone and got to watch some TV while waiting for the doctor to do her thing.

She was happy to leave the doctors office and was excited to be heading to the airport to pick up Katie’s father who is visiting for the weekend.

Once home it was time for Sadbh to have a bath and then trach care. She was getting hungry but before dinner she snuggled up to Poppy and listened as he read her a few books. She was delighted with herself and really enjoyed how Poppy read to her.

Sadbh’s nurse called in sick today so after dinner I moved all her equipment upstairs to her bedroom that is next door to ours. Sadbh was so happy to be sleeping upstairs and when it came time to go to bed she did not need much convincing.

Sadbh’s update – February 26, 2015

Sadbh slept great and woke up around quarter to seven. She was in a very good mood and was delighted that I brought Cillian with me when I came in to take over from Jirapa.

We had a busy morning with a scheduled meeting with a couple of people from the nursing agency. We deal so much with this office over the phone and e-mail that it was a good time to meet some of the team face to face.
Sadbh was full of chat when they arrived and at one point we thought that she would lead the meeting entirely.

After that meeting we had a call with Sadbh’s case manager from the Department of Health and Services. We were notified yesterday that Sadbh’s Medicare coverage is due to end on April 1st so this call was to go over our options and to see what steps we have to take to get Sadbh’s coverage reinstated.

Once we were done with all the calls and meetings it was time to Skype with Sadbh’s cousin, Fionn, back in Cork.
Sadbh was happy to see Fionn bouncing in his baby chair and she was also happy to see her aunt Ann and uncle Ger.

Ali-Baba stopped by later in the afternoon and Sadbh got stuck into playing with her ball of wool. She had so much fun but ended up making a web of yarn out of it.

By the time Ali-Baba left Sadbh was exhausted and very difficult to deal with. She became quite jealous of Cillian and demanded a lot of attention from Katie. It was very draining on us all and by bedtime Sadbh was a wreck and ready for bed.
Thankfully she was asleep in seconds.

Sadbh’s update – February 25, 2015

Sadbh woke up at seven and initially did not want me to take over from Jirapa. I quickly won her over and as soon as Jirapa left it was time for Sadbh to have breakfast.

She had a dentist appointment today and everything went great. Her dentist was not concerned about Sadbh still using her binky (pacifier) every day and felt that her teeth looked great regardless.
She did everything that was asked of her and she even earned a treat for doing so well.
Things did not go so well as we were leaving the dentist office. Sadbh wanted to play with some of the toys in the kid’s area and she got extremely upset when we refused to let her.
It can be very difficult for us as we want her to enjoy herself in the same way other kids do, however since she has a much higher risk of getting sick it leaves us with this difficult predicament.

After Sadbh calmed down we headed off to buy her riding pants and gloves for her riding class this coming Saturday. She was very excited and wore her gloves for the trip home.

The rest of the evening was spent with Sadbh pretending to be a dentist and both Katie and I were her patients. She seemed to know what she was doing but I was glad she did not decide to give either of us a filling or a tooth removal.

Her new bed frame arrived today and Sadbh was eager to help put it together. It took a while and she was actually quite helpful. Once it was assembled she was so proud and I’m sure she cannot wait until she can sleep in it.

Bedtime tonight was a piece of cake and Sadbh was out very quickly.

Sadbh’s update – February 24, 2015

Sadbh slept great and was awake and up the stairs by seven. She was in a wonderful mood but she insisted right away that she did not want school today.

After breakfast Sadbh had no choice but to attend class. Today she brought along a few of her favorite ponies so at least she had good company.

Later in the day we headed down to the Seattle center to check out the Chihuly Garden and Glass museum. Sadbh was all excited thinking that she was going to be seeing an ice forest but thankfully she was not disappointed with the amazing glass art that was on display throughout.

Shortly after we arrived at the Seattle Center Sadbh saw the huge fountain and since it was sunny she wanted to go down and get as close to the water as possible. She ran back and forth chasing and being chased by the water. It was so much fun and by the time she was done she was fairly wet. We had a change of clothes for her so she was bone dry in no time.

Bedtime this evening was very easy as Sadbh was completely exhausted. She was out moments after her head hit the pillow.

Sadbh’s update – February 23, 2015

When Sadbh’s new nurse, Mary, started last night we told her about Sadbh catching her finger in the door. It was a very minor incident and it was probably the shock that freaked Sadbh out the most.
Mary needed to know all the details of the “accident” so she could update the information into the nurse’s log. Such is the world that we live in.

Sadbh had a good night and slept like a log. I took over from Mary at half past six and twenty minutes later Sadbh was awake. She was in a good mood and hung out in her bed for another half hour or so.
When she finally climbed out of bed she quickly unhooked all her equipment and got dressed and ready for breakfast.

Once breakfast was over it was time for home school. Sadbh initially did not want to go but Mommy made it a lot of fun and soon Sadbh was really enjoying herself.
Part of today’s class involved a science experiment mixing yeast with hydrogen peroxide. It was a fun project that we named “elephant toothpaste” and Sadbh could not wait to get it going.
It was a very easy experiment but it did not seem to work at first. It took a little more time than expected but soon the reaction between the different materials started to produce warm foam that poured up through the bottle. Sadbh was over the moon and as soon as she realized that it was safe to touch she could not wait to get one of her ponies into the foam.

We had a wonderful day and after home school we headed out into the garden to play in the warm sunshine. Sadbh met her friend Charlie walking down the street so she invited her to play in the back garden.
The two girls had a lot of fun and competed with each other to see who could dig the most amount of gravel. It was a good time and Sadbh was sad to see Charlie go.

When Sadbh was done digging up half the garden it was time to head in and get cleaned up for trach care. She was getting tired but was still in a very good mood for the rest of the evening.

Sadbh’s update – February 22, 2015

Sadbh had a better night and according to Mary she slept well.
She was awake by seven and as soon as Mommy took over she was up the stairs to hang out with Cillian.

Katie and Cillian were invited to Theresa and Orla’s for a tea party so Sadbh and I decided to have a date. She wanted to go see a movie so we headed downtown to see Paddington. Sadbh was all excited and could not wait.
It was a lot of fun and thankfully the cinema was not too busy. Sadbh enjoyed herself and afterwards we headed up to Capitol Hill to get some ice cream.

Sadbh did not want the fun to end when we got home and was planning all sorts of fun activities for us to play. Unfortunately, she got her finger caught in her bedroom door and the pain was too much for her. I quickly had to sanitize my hands and then get her trach cap off. It took a while to calm her down and when she finally did she was exhausted. The two of us snuggled up on the couch and fell asleep for a while.

She was still asleep when Mommy and Cillian arrived home and as soon as she woke up she was so happy to see Cillian sitting in the chair next to her.

Before bed we gave Sadbh a bath and managed trach care. It took a while to get her to sleep and thankfully she was out before the nurse arrived.

I had to retrain the nurse on checking and adjusting the compressor after she arrived as the settings was at the lowest settings this morning when we took over.

Sadbh’s update – February 21, 2015

Sadbh was tossing and turning all night. Katie and I were observing on the baby monitor and the nurse cam and noticed that Mary, the new nurse, was making a lot of noise as she familiarized herself the layout of Sadbh’s room and medical equipment.

Sadbh woke up just before seven and she had a great time getting to know Mary and also showing off all her toys.

She was in a great mood this morning and came up to wake me up with a big “I love you daddy”.
Ali-Baba came by later in the morning and she and Sadbh got to spend some good time together.

After trach care we headed down to the International District to join the festivities for Chinese New Year. Unfortunately, we were late getting out of the house so we missed out on a few of the fun celebrations.

By now Sadbh was very tired so we headed over to Alki Beach to enjoy the sunshine. Sadbh passed out in the car along the way so she got to catch up on some well-deserved rest.

Her quick nap did the trick and Sadbh woke up a short time later in a much better mood.

Sadbh’s great mood lasted for the rest of the evening and when it came time for bed she was in a happy and goofy mood.

Sadbh’s update – February 20, 2015

Sadbh slept great and woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed at quarter to seven. She was in a wonderful mood and ready for breakfast when I took over at half past seven.
Breakfast took almost an hour, all meals take forever for Sadbh, and when she was done we had to get ready to visit Conor, Aibhin and their new baby brother Odran.

Sadbh was delighted to be visiting her friends and was very excited for Cillian to meet his new friend.
The kids all had fun playing together and we even got to read a few of Aibhin and Conor’s favorite books.
Sadbh did not want to go when it came time to leave.

The rest of the evening was a little bit trying as Sadbh and I butted heads and just could not get along.
It was exhausting for the entire family and I think Cillian even got a little cranky as a result.

Trach care was stressful but thankfully we made up afterwards and the rest of the evening was a lot better.

We have a new nurse starting tonight and the thought of showing this new person the ropes is not very exciting.
Sadbh mentioned before she went to bed that she does not want a new nurse and wanted Katie to phone Jirapa to come instead.

Sadbh’s update – February 19, 2015

Sadbh woke up a couple of times throughout the night but went back to sleep quickly each time. She finally woke up after Jirapa left and asked me to snuggle up with her for a while before finally getting out of bed.

She was in a wonderful mood and was delighted when Mommy and Cillian came down to join her for breakfast.

In the afternoon, after we finished trach care, we headed off out to Northgate to exchange a book and to pick up a few things along the way. Sadbh was very happy but she was also starting to get tired.

While in the mall we stopped off to pick up some new clothes for Cillian. Sadbh spotted a pair of sparkly slippers, similar to a pair that her friend Clodagh has, and Sadbh wanted them something fierce. Unfortunately for Sadbh, we had no intention in buying them and especially not after the huge tantrum she threw for the next fifteen minutes or so. We had to sanitize and remove her trach cap as she was having difficulty breathing.  She lashed out kicking, slapping, pinching and spitting and I had to carry her out of the mall and back to the car. As soon as I placed her into her car seat she calmed down and soon after she was fast asleep.
It was clearly obvious that she was super tired and this did not help when she did not get what she wanted.

We left her sleep for twenty minutes and when she woke up she was the happiest kid in the world. She instantly apologized, without any prompting from either Katie or myself and you could tell she was genuinely sorry.

The rest of the day was great and Sadbh had so much fun snuggling up with Cillian and playing with her toys.
Bedtime was easy with Sadbh going to sleep without any difficulty.

Sadbh’s update – February 18, 2015

Sadbh woke up at half past six and managed to stay in bed while holding Jirapa’s hand for another hour.
She was a little cranky at first but it did not take long to get her back into a better mood.

Sadbh was in for a treat in the early afternoon. Katie and Sadbh had an appointment with Ali-Baba to get their nails done. Sadbh was so excited and insisted that I stay at home with Cillian. As a result, Katie drove solo with Sadbh in the car for the first time. This was a big step for us as we usually always have someone in the car close to Sadbh incase there is an issue with Sadbh’s trach.

Sadbh had so much fun getting her nails painted and she chose silvery gold, which turned out to be a great color.
She also enjoyed spending time with Ali-Baba and was sad when it came time to head home.

On their way home they stopped off to pick up Clodagh from school. Sadbh was thrilled to have a play date for the evening and as soon as they arrived home the two girls got down to some serious fun.
It was incredible to watch how busy they were and how much energy they had to burn off.

By bedtime, Sadbh was climbing the walls. Katie and I got trach care set up and with Cillian strapped to me we got trach care done as quickly as possible so Sadbh could go to sleep.
Thanks to a busy day Sadbh was fast asleep by quarter to eight.

Sadbh’s update – February 17, 2015

Sadbh slept like a log and woke up just as Jirapa’s shift was coming to an end.
She was in an excellent mood when I took over and wanted me to pretend that I was a monster so we played for a while until it was finally time to get up and have breakfast.

Sadbh’s morning started off well but things got very ugly after breakfast. When Katie headed up to shower Sadbh got very upset and wanted to go with her. I was hoping to get her home schooling under way but she fought me tooth and nail. It was a serious melt down and despite all my best efforts I could not get her to calm down. I stood my ground and would not let her go upstairs so we had to wait until Katie came down. As soon as she did Sadbh calmed down immediately.
We had a big chat about what had happened, what went wrong and how we could manage ourselves the next time and for the rest of the day Sadbh was in a great mood and very well behaved.

After school and trach care we headed downtown to the waterfront for a ride on the Seattle Great Wheel. Sadbh was so excited and could not wait to get on.
Since we could not take the stroller on I carried all her equipment from the car to the Ferris and since the entire waterfront is under construction it ended up being a very long walk.
The Ferris wheel was a lot of fun and Sadbh was completely blown away with the incredible views all around.
After that she got to ride on the carousel and was just as impressed. Just before she got on the horse she did the same exercises that she did when horse riding last weekend.
Cillian was asleep the entire time so he missed out on the excitement.

As Sadbh was getting ready for bed she wanted to send her friend Grace a message on Katie’s phone. She showed Grace the foot that he has her Oximeter attached to and her humidifier mask and hose, which she called her elephant trunk. It was very sweet and funny.

Sadbh’s update – February 16, 2015

Sadbh did a great job getting tangled up in her humidifier hose throughout the night. She woke up around half past six and started calling for Katie to come in for a snuggle.

We had a meet and greet scheduled for ten this morning and both Katie and I wanted to not like the new nurse. She was about fifteen minutes late for our meeting but she had a good excuse and won us over with her personality, experience and how she connected with Sadbh. It was bitter sweet for us as we were hoping to get rid of all nursing coverage sooner rather than later.
Even Sadbh liked her so she will start on Friday covering weekends in the place of Harjinder.

Sadbh had a play date with her friend Grace today and as soon as Grace arrived Sadbh brought her up stairs to show off her new room. The two girls bonded quickly as they talked about air tubes that they each need while they sleep.

The girls had a great time together and each one took turns taking the lead on role playing and prancing around in Sadbh’s dress up shoes.

Sadbh was completely wiped out when Grace and her parents left and she ended up falling asleep on the couch. Fearing that we would have a difficult time getting her to bed tonight we allowed her to sleep for twenty minutes and woke her up for trach care.

It was a beautiful day so after trach care we headed out for a walk. Sadbh was still tired but really enjoyed being out in the fresh air.

Bedtime was a piece of cake this evening and Sadbh even got to snuggle up with Cillian beforehand.

Sadbh’s update – February 15, 2015

Sadbh was tossing and turning all night but Katie and I had her well covered and untangled every time she got herself tied up.
Both Sadbh and Cillian kept us busy throughout the night and by six Sadbh was awake and looking for Mommy to join her in bed for a cuddle.
Cillian hung out with me but was awake a few minutes later.

Sadbh had a couple of play dates planned for the day and later in the morning her friend Ixchel came by with her mummy, Chris.
Sadbh could not wait to show Ixchel her new room and after that they headed down to the basement to play with Sadbh’s toys.
They had a great time together and even Cillian got in on the action when each of the girls took turns holding him.

After Ixchel left Sadbh was looking very tired. She refused to take a nap so Katie and I managed trach care and then we all headed out for a walk.
Sadbh enjoyed being out in the sunshine and the fresh air gave her a nice boost of energy.

Later in the evening Clodagh, Cormac and Derek came by for dinner. Sadbh showed off her bedroom again and was very proud.
After dinner they headed down to the basement to play and to watch a movie.
Sadbh was exhausted when everyone left so bedtime was very easy.

She did get upset a few times throughout the day so we had to remove her trach cap so she could breathe easier and then calm down.

Sadbh’s update – February 14, 2015

Katie and I took turns checking on Sadbh throughout the night. We had to untangle her from her equipment, drain water from her humidifier hose and reset her Oximeter every time it alarmed.
Sadbh slept great and was up bright and early at half past six in the morning.

We had a fun day planned for Sadbh and after breakfast we headed out to Snoqualmie Falls for a horse-riding lesson. Sadbh was a little cranky this morning so she took a nap in the car as we headed to the horse farm.

Sadbh could not believe her eyes when she woke up and saw the horses in the barn.
Shortly after meeting her horse, Jamie, Sadbh got to groom and learn how to clean Jamie’s hooves.  Jamie is 22 years old and spent most of her time with special needs kids so she was a perfect horse for Sadbh.
She was very attentive and also learned how to walk behind Jamie while tapping her hind legs gently so as to let Jamie know where she was and not to startle her.

Next it was off to the riding paddock for the rest of her riding lesson.
Sadbh was a natural and even mounted Jamie without any difficulty.
It was amazing to watch Sadbh riding the horse and how quickly she was able to learn.

The rest of the day was fun and Sadbh was beaming with excitement from her experience.

Later in the evening our friends Neil and Denise came by for dinner. When Sadbh heard this she was happy and told Mommy that she really likes Denise.

Bedtime took a little while but after some snuggles with Mommy she was soon fast asleep.

Sadbh’s update – February 13, 2015

Sadbh woke up around six but thankfully went back to sleep for another hour or so. She greeted me with a kick as she was expecting Mommy to come down. It did not take long for her to apologize and soon we were having a wonderful morning together.

After breakfast Ali-Baba came by and Sadbh was over the moon. They had a great time together and with a little help from Mommy they were soon baking Valentine’s Day sugar cookies. Sadbh had so much fun.

Ali-Baba took care of Cillian while Katie and I managed trach care. Everything went well and as soon as we finished up Sadbh’s brand new mattress arrived.
I had been working on setting up her equipment in her new bedroom all morning and with her new mattress set up she was good to go. Her room will be complete next week when the bed frame arrives but this did not dampen Sadbh’s mood. Despite being completely exhausted it still took an hour and a half before she finally dropped off to sleep, as she was so excited for her new bedroom.

Sadbh’s update – February 12, 2015

Sadbh woke up at quarter to seven and was very happy when I came down to take over from Jirapa. As soon as Jirapa left Sadbh and I got breakfast ready and soon we were joined by Mommy.

We had a very busy day and right after home school we had an appointment with Sadbh’s case manager from the Department of Social & Health Services.
This meeting was for her annual assessment and both the case manager and nurse were very impressed with Sadbh’s development.

The meeting went well and after that Sadbh had a quick lunch and then we were off to the hospital for an ultrasound appointment for Cillian.
Since Cillian was breech while in Katie’s tummy the doctor wanted to check his hips to make sure that everything was good. He was very upset throughout the ultrasound and even Sadbh joined in helping to calm him down. After all that he got a clean bill of health and should have no problems with his hips.

The rest of the day was spent playing at home and by evening Sadbh was beyond tired and quite the handful. Dinner was an ordeal and when it came time for bed she was completely wrecked tired. Katie and I still had to manage trach care and thankfully she allowed us to without any issues.
Needless to say, she was out like a light in seconds.

Sadbh’s update – February 11, 2015

Sadbh was awake and holding Jirapa’s hand this morning when I popped in at quarter past seven. She woke up fifteen minutes earlier after a good night sleep and thankfully she was in an excellent mood.

She had a good start to the day and devoured her breakfast just before Mommy and Cillian arrived on the scene.

Once Sadbh was dressed it was time for home school and today Katie was the substitute teacher.
At one point Sadbh was kissing Cillian’s head when she noticed that he has cradle cap. She asked what it was and when I arrived on the scene she explained to me that Cillian had cradle crap. Very funny!

Since the nursing agency has dropped the ball and has left us without a nurse this weekend we decided to speed up our plan to eventually get rid of the nurses altogether. On Friday, after Jirapa’s shift ends, we will move all of Sadbh’s medical equipment upstairs to the small room next to ours. Our plan is to see how it goes with Sadbh sleeping by herself a room away from us.
With this in mind we headed out today to buy Sadbh’s first proper big girl bed. We started off with the mattress first and if it works out we will then buy her a bed frame to go with it.

By the time we had gotten the mattress, sheets and other bedding items Sadbh was very tired. She snoozed on the way home and it took a while for her to wake up once we arrived home.

Once awake she was full of energy again and after dinner she got to chat with Ali-Baba over Face Time.
Katie and I managed trach care just before Sadbh went to bed and it was a little stressful since Cillian was awake and screaming his little head off.

At bedtime Sadbh had worked up some secretions in her trach and she was fascinated with the sounds it made. She declared that it sounded like a motorcycle and she ran around the house pretending to be riding a motorbike.

Back in 2013 we had to fight Sadbh’s insurance company three times. The first of those battles required four appeals before we succeeded.
We were fortunate to avail of the services of a wonderful and caring attorney who supported us through all the appeals without charging us a penny.
This attorney and a team of her colleagues are meeting the Washington State lawmakers on Friday to try to pass legislation to reform the Independent Review Organization (IRO) process in Washington State. This legislation would ensure that IRO decisions are made public so others can benefit from successful IRO decisions. It will also strengthen the regulators ability to review the decisions and identify systemic problems.
We were asked to testify in support of the legislation and share our experiences with the IRO process. Unfortunately, we will be unable to testify in person on Friday however we were able to submit or testimony in writing and hopefully this team of attorneys will be successful in their efforts.

After we won the IRO decision in 2013 we gave our consent for the IRO decision to be shared for the benefit of other similar cases.
We learned today that this has been used many times and has helped other cases win as well.

Sadbh’s update – February 10, 2015

Sadbh woke up around quarter to seven and stayed in bed until I took over at half past seven. She was quick to jump out of bed and came running to me with a huge smile on her face.
Mommy had a hair appointment that would keep her busy all morning so I got to hang out with Sadbh and Cillian.

We had a really good morning and as soon as breakfast was gobbled up it was time for home school.
Cillian slept for the first half hour and as soon as he woke up Sadbh was not pleased. She wanted my attention the entire time and got fairly annoyed when this did not happen. The next hour or so were quite the challenge and every time I was able to get Cillian back to sleep Sadbh would come by and wake him up. She has yet to learn that while Cillian is awake she has to share my time with him. When he’s asleep she get’s my full attention the entire time.

Eventually I was able to get Cillian back to sleep, long enough to get Sadbh set up with a fun project in the kitchen. We got to make multi colored bubble foam and for the next hour Sadbh had a fantastic time.

This project led us up to lunchtime and as Sadbh was finishing up her food our friend Neil stopped by for a visit.
Sadbh was happy to see Neil and was very chatty while he joined us for lunch.

After Katie arrived home we got trach care under way and then headed out for a walk through the neighborhood.
It had turned out to be a beautiful evening and Sadbh enjoyed being out. She brought her new doll with her and showed it off to everyone she passed along the way.

The rest of the evening was spent playing with a bunch of her toys and by bedtime she was wiped out so going to sleep was no problem at all.

All the best,
