Sadbh’s update – January 31, 2015

Sadbh woke up at seven and hung out with Harjinder until I came down not long after.
She was in a good mood and wanted to start playing with her toys straight away.
Instead we headed up stairs and jumped into bed with Mommy and Cillian for a half hour before finally getting up for breakfast.

Later in the morning Ali-Baba came by and Sadbh was so excited to see her. They had a lot of fun reading books and playing.
When it came time for trach care Ali-Baba helped Katie get it done.

As the day progressed, Sadbh was starting to act up. Even though she was being affectionate towards Cillian she was being very aggressive and would not listen to Katie or I when we tried to explain that she needed to be more gentle. It was obvious that it was a combination of being extremely tired and some jealousy towards her brother. It is always difficult and very stressful when Sadbh get’s upset as she ends up having difficulty breathing and we need to move quickly to sanitize and then remove her trach cap to open up her airway.

Later in the evening we headed over to Suzie’s house so Sadbh could hang out with Clodagh and Cormac. She was so excited to see her two friends and she immediately headed down to Clodagh’s room to try on some princess costumes.
The three kids had a wonderful time and when it came time to go home Sadbh was not happy. She was exhausted and very reluctant to leave. Thankfully she was fast asleep by the time we got home so getting her into bed was a piece of cake.

Sadbh’s update – January 30, 2015

Sadbh woke up very early and when I came in to take over shortly after seven she was in bed holding Jirapa’s hand. Poor Jirapa had been kneeling next to Sadbh’s bed while holding her hand for at least forty-five minutes.

Sadbh was in a great mood and wanted to hang out with me instead of waking Mommy up.
We got busy making breakfast and getting ready for the day.

Katie and I got trach care completed early today and afterwards we headed to the city records department to pick Cillian’s birth certificate up.
We had to wait for a while and eventually Sadbh started to get bored and very restless. Cillian joined in on the fun and between both kids things got a little stressful.

The rest of the day was great.
After dinner she wrote a love card for Nana and Granddad, unfortunately she did not have any ink in her pen, however I was able to capture her recital on video.
Sadbh helped bathe Cillian and she learned how to be gentle while showering him with kisses and hugs. Since day one she has been very affectionate with him but unfortunately she does not know her own strength.

By bedtime she was completely pooped and was out like a light instantly.

Sadbh’s update – January 29, 2015

Sadbh slept great and woke up shortly after eight well rested. She wanted to head up to Mommy but since Cillian had us up quite a bit through the night I persuaded Sadbh to have breakfast and to let Mommy and Cillian sleep in for a while longer.

It was a lovely day so we decided to head to the zoo after trach care. Sadbh was excited with this idea so trach care was very easy.

Despite the good weather, we practically had the zoo to ourselves.
At the gorilla exhibit Sadbh and I checked out a statue of a gorilla family. Sadbh and I were laughing at how it was like our family. There was a father, mother, young and baby gorilla. Sadbh even named them after us.

Sadbh had so much fun but was desperate to ride on the carousel. We figured that we would get to the carousel just as we would finish up but unfortunately by the time we arrived it had closed for the day. Sadbh was a good sport about it and did not fuss whatsoever.

The rest of the day was spent playing or reading books. She had a wonderful day and was fast asleep before eight.

Sadbh’s update – January 28, 2015

Sadbh slept better than the rest of us last night and was up bright and early at seven. She had a good start to the day and was happy chatting with Jirapa when I came down shortly afterwards.

As soon as Jirapa left we headed upstairs and Sadbh got to snuggle up with Mommy.

We had a lazy but fun day. Sadbh got to play with as many toys as she could get her hands on.
After trach care and lunch we headed out in the car for a drive down to the lake. It was a beautiful day and we had planned to go for a walk along the water. That was until Sadbh fell asleep so we drove on and both Katie and I enjoyed the silence for a while instead.

Sadbh was fully charged by the time we got home and was ready to get back to playing with her toys. We each took turns playing with her and did out best to tire her out for bedtime. This did not work and she finally fell asleep close to ten.

When we arrived home Sadbh got to listen to a voice mail that she received from Granddad and Nana and she was so excited to hear from them.

Sadbh’s update – January 27, 2015

It was an early start for the Walsh grandparents, as they had to be at the airport bright and early. Unfortunately it was too early to wake Sadbh up so just as they were about to leave they popped into Sadbh room to give her a kiss good bye.
As soon as they went into her room they found here awake and holding onto Jirapa’s hand. They said a quick good bye in the hope that she would go back to sleep and headed off, very heart broken.

After they left, Sadbh started to cry and wanted Katie. Katie took over from Jirapa and once she was signed out Sadbh headed up stairs with Katie and Cillian.

It was a sad farewell at the airport and once my parents were through security I headed home. Sadbh was in a better mood when I arrived and she was looking out the window as I approached the house. When she realized that Nana and Granddad we not with me she got sad again. Apparently, when she first got up, she went running downstairs saying “Grandad? Nana?”.  Katie had to remind her that the were off back to Ireland.

Katie and I gave Sadbh a bath just before lunch and after that we managed trach care.
Sadbh and Cillian were very restless so we decided to jump in the car and go for a spin. The two kids were fast asleep in no time and they were both able to get a nice well-deserved nap.

Earlier in the day Sadbh decided that she wanted to go to Café Presse for dinner since she had not been there in ages.
It was good idea since neither Katie nor I wanted to cook tonight. It was definitely a lot more cramped with four of us along with Sadbh’s two medical bags.

In the evening, Sadbh was suddenly very interested in seeing what a stoma looks like and she really wanted to see hers. Katie pulled up a few photos of some trach stoma sites and was very careful to only show her healthy ones. She is really interested in getting rid of her trach as she wants to go visit her grandparent back home in Ireland.
She even mentioned that Ali-Baba will drop her to the airport as soon as her trach is out so she can get on a plane and head over to see them, with us of course.

Bedtime tonight was a breeze as Sadbh was exhausted.

Sadbh’s update – January 26, 2015

When Sadbh woke up she wanted Granddad to sit next to her and hold her hand. Katie and I were watching on the monitor and it was the sweetest thing ever.

Sadbh was in a great mood and she got to snuggle with Cillian while Katie and I got ready.

It was my parents last day and Ali-Baba came by to hang out and say good bye. Sadbh was happy to see Ali-Baba and she enjoyed playing with her along with Nana and Granddad.

Over the past few days Sadbh has been expressing how sad she is that Nana and Granddad are leaving. We have been telling her that it is better to enjoy the time she has with them rather than being sad all the time. Today was a great day and she had so much fun making the most of her time with her grandparents.

She even got to stay up for an extra hour and when it came time to go to bed she gave each of them a big kiss and a hug. Unfortunately, she will be asleep when they leave for the airport in the morning.

We are all going to miss my parents and we are so grateful for everything they have done over the past month and a half.
We would have been completely lost if they were not around to help care for Sadbh when we were in the hospital having Cillian.
Thank you Nana and Granddad for everything. Words cannot accurately describe our gratitude and we consider ourselves to be so fortunate to get to share this time with you.

I'm not sure if I've ever said this before but I have the best parents that anyone could ever have. They are without a doubt the most caring, selfless, compassionate and helpful people ever and if Katie and I turn out half as good as they are we will be doing extremely well.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie, Sadbh and Cillian.

Sadbh’s update – January 25, 2015

Sadbh woke up early again and wanted Harjinder to hold her hand as she was afraid for some reason. Poor Harjinder had to sit on a stool next to Sadbh’s bed and I’m sure it was not very comfortable for her.

We had a great day today and after breakfast Katie and I got trach care out of the way.
Later we Skyped with Sadbh’s cousin Fionn who will hopefully be going home from hospital tomorrow.
It was a beautiful day so we sat outside on the back deck and enjoyed the warm sun for a while.

Afterwards we loaded up the car and headed to Fremont to check out the market.
Sadbh had a great time and even got to see a hardcore Seahawk fan all dressed up in Seahawk colors with her three doggies.
Sadbh ran into a little bit of trouble at one stall. The guy was selling shoes and Sadbh had fun walking amongst the shoes on display. They shoe seller asked Sadbh very politely not to mess up his display and Sadbh took great offence. She ended up very “frustrated” with the man and could not stop talking about it for the rest of the day.

Since it was such a beautiful day we headed over to Alki Beach, along with the rest of Seattle, for a walk along the beach. Sadbh, Nana and Granddad walked along the shore looking for rocks and shells. She also got to ride her scooter for a while.

For dinner we headed to Jak’s in West Seattle and got to catch up with a couple of friends, Mick and Marissa, that work there.
Sadbh was busy throughout dinner drawing and she did a fantastic job coloring within the lines.

By the time we got home it was nearly time for bed. Sadbh did not put up any resistance and was fast asleep in no time at all.
It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Sadbh’s update – January 24, 2015

Sadbh woke up during the night and asked Harjinder if she would hold her hand. She was fast asleep in minutes and she slept in until eight.

We had a nice snuggle after she came upstairs and during breakfast Sadbh took on the important job of watching after her brother on the baby video monitor.
Once she was done with breakfast it was time for trach care.

Later on she got to Skype with her cousin, Fionn, who is recovering from surgery in Ireland. Despite being in pain he was full of smiles when he saw Sadbh and she felt really bad for everything that he has been through. I hope they both get to meet each other soon.

Katie is still feeling off so Sadbh, Cillian and the grandparents joined me when I headed out to run some errands.
Cillian slept the entire time we were out and Sadbh was happy hanging out with us.
We ended up going to a mall so Nana and Granddad could pick up a few items before they head back to Ireland. When Sadbh realized that she was going to the mall she asked for a doughnut and hot chocolate. Apparently these are treats that she gets when she goes to the mall with Mommy.

After we arrived home Sadbh, Cillian, Nana and Granddad all headed out to Nora’s woods for a walk. She was reluctant to go initially but when she realized that she could wear her new red coat and bring her doll and stroller, she could not wait to go.
She really enjoyed her walk and pretending to be chased by the big bad wolf when she arrived at the woods.

Bedtime was easy tonight as Sadbh was exhausted from a busy day.

Sadbh’s cousin, Belle Rose, who is nine has been e-mailing Sadbh over the past few weeks. Sadbh responded with a video message today and hopefully Belle Rose will enjoy the response.

Sadbh really loves having a new little brother however over the past few days she has been asking for a baby sister. Today, while Sadbh was out walking with Nana and Granddad, Sadbh said “after dinner tonight my daddy is going to make a baby”. That’s a very tall order.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie, Sadbh and Cillian.

Sadbh’s update – January 23, 2015

Sadbh wore her trach cap until ten when Jirapa removed it to allow her to breathe comfortably.
She woke up at two and told the nurse that she was scared and asked if she could hold her hand. Jirapa held her hand until quarter to four while Sadbh slept.
She must have been very tired as she slept in until after eight.

We all had a fun day playing and in the afternoon, once trach care was finished, Katie and I headed into town to take care of some business.
Nana and Granddad took care of Sadbh and Cillian and since Cillian slept the whole time they got to have some special playtime with Sadbh.
She wanted to wear her favorite red coat that Nana brought over from Ireland and she pretended that she was red riding hood. Granddad had to explain the story to her and she had a great time.

When Katie and I returned home, Sadbh was clearly very tired.  She kept saying that when she is alone she is scared.  We are not sure where this is coming from, but we tried to reassure her that she is always safe and very rarely alone.

After dinnertime, as she was cleaned up,it was time to get ready for bed.
Sadbh and Mommy snuggled up while Mommy read a few books.
Soon after Sadbh got into bed she was out like a light.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie, Sadbh and Cillian.

Sadbh’s update – January 22, 2015

Sadbh woke up just as Jirapa was finishing up and as soon as she was freed from her equipment she was up the stairs like a shot.

We had a very good day hanging out in the house and even Ali-Baba and Kirk came by for a visit.
Sadbh got to snuggle with Ali-Baba as she read some books and later she entertained everyone in the basement with her role playing. At one point she stuffed one of her smallest dolls into her dress and announced to everyone that she had a baby in her belly and that she needed to go to the hospital. She then cracked everyone up by telling them that the baby was “head down”.

After lunch we headed out into the garden to play and Sadbh got to go for a ride in her red wagon as well as her scooter.
She loved being outside with Granddad and despite the cold and damp weather she had a fantastic time.

Granddad and I managed trach care in the early evening and Sadbh was extremely cooperative.

Katie wasn’t feeling well throughout the day so after dinner she headed up to bed. Usually Sadbh will only go to bed for Katie but tonight she was great and went to bed without any issues. She was fast asleep within five minutes and even wore her trach cap.
She did have some strider when she slept on her back so the nurse kept a close eye on her and made sure she slept on her side to reduce the strider.

Wayne, Katie, Sadbh and Cillian.

Sadbh’s update – January 21, 2015

Sadbh had a great night and once she was up it was straight up stairs for a snuggle.
We had plans to go for a ferry ride today so after breakfast Granddad and I got trach care out of the way and as soon as we had that completed we loaded the car and headed downtown to the ferry.

Sadbh was all excited and wanted to know exactly how cars were loaded on and off the ferry.
Once onboard we headed up to the top deck and Sadbh loved having the wind blowing in her face. It was bitter cold but she could have stayed out there for the entire crossing if she got her way.

The ferry took us to Bainbridge Island and since it was close to lunchtime we decided to stop off in Winslow for a bite to eat.

We had a great time on Bainbridge and later as we drove around the island Sadbh fell asleep. She snoozed for almost an hour and woke up just as we were heading back to the ferry. Unfortunately she had an accident in her car seat. Thankfully Katie was prepared so we were able to get Sadbh changed into dry clothes fairly quickly.

Bedtime tonight was easy and despite her nap she went to sleep without any problems.

Sadbh’s update – January 20, 2015

Sadbh slept past seven again this morning and woke up in a good mood. As soon as she was unhooked from her medical equipment she was off up to make sure that we were awake too.

She had a fun day playing and later in the day, after trach care, we went to visit Ali-Baba and Kirk.
Sadbh loves visiting Ali-Baba as she gets to spend time with her and she also gets to play with the stash of toys that they keep for all their grandkids.

Sadbh fell asleep on the drive home and she was so tired when we put her to bed once we arrived home.
Despite being completely exhausted she wanted to wear her trach cap going to bed. She has been averaging two and a half hours a night while wearing her trach cap. Eventually it does have to come off as her breathing becomes labored and we can hear strider with each breath.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie, Sadbh and Cillian.

Sadbh’s update – January 19, 2015

Sadbh slept great and woke up just before eight. She was up the stairs as quickly as possible and snuggled up with Mommy until she got bored and wanted everyone to get up.

We all had a fun morning and after breakfast Sadbh got dressed up like a polka dot fairy with a technicolor zebra hoodie. It was quite the sight.

After trach care we headed out for a walk up to the Seattle U campus and Sadbh was treated like royalty by her grandparents. She asked to be carried like a queen and she was delighted with herself when they obliged.

She had a great evening playing with her toys and things only got better when our next door neighbor, Pat, and his son, Charlie came by to meet Cillian. Sadbh and Charlie headed down to the basement to play with Sadbh’s toys. They eventually started to role-play the movie Frozen with Charlie playing Olaf, and Sadbh played, Queen Elsa, Princess Anna and even the evil witch in Tangled. She had so much fun and really enjoyed her time with Charlie.

Bedtime was much later than usual and thankfully she was out like a light seconds after her head hit the pillow.

Sadbh’s update – January 18, 2015

Sadbh was up bright and early and spent an hour or so with Harjinder before finally heading up to join us.
We were convinced that she would sleep in since she went to bed so early and were very surprised when she woke up when she did.
Katie and I were up half the night with Cillian so it we were all very tired today.

Granddad and I managed trach care today and afterwards Katie and I surprised Sadbh with a Mommy, Daddy and Sadbh date. She wanted Cillian to come along but since we wanted to pay her some special attention for a few hours we arranged to leave Cillian with his grandparents.

Sadbh was delighted to get out of the house but fell asleep in the car after a short while. This was fine as we also had to run a couple of errands.
When she finally woke up we headed up to Capitol Hill for some frozen yogurt. Sadbh was delighted with herself as today’s special was strawberry cheesecake. She enjoyed her treat and after she devoured it she wanted to dance. The two of us danced for a while and we both had a fantastic time.
She was also very excited about the Seahawks win over Green Bay, despite the fact that none of us are sports fans.

After dinner Sadbh got to watch a movie and she snuggled up next to me for the entire show. It was Monster’s Inc and she was definitely afraid during parts of it.
When it came time for bed she was delirious and put up quite the fight. She had a major meltdown and straight away we had to remove her trach cap so she could breathe properly. It was a stressful time for the three of us and even though she eventually calmed down it still took a long time for her to fall asleep.
Thankfully, though, she was fast asleep before Harjinder arrived.

Wayne, Katie, Sadbh and Cillian.

Sadbh’s update – January 17, 2015

Sadbh tolerated her trach cap for an hour before we had to remove it. She was starting to work harder to breathe so we decided to take it off so she could have a better night sleep.

She woke up at four this morning and wanted to get her day started. When I talked to her about why she was awake so early she answered that she wanted to play with me. I don’t know if this is true or if she was trying to sweet talk me.
According to Harjinder, Sadbh wanted her mist collar off and as soon as she asked for this Harjinder knew that Sadbh wanted to go up stairs. Harjinder explained that she could not go up as it was way too early and Sadbh responded with a growl.
Eventually Harjinder was able to get her back to sleep and she slept on until twenty past seven. She did not want to spend time with Granddad and took off up stairs to spend time with us.

We discovered after she came up that she hit Granddad and she told us that she was frustrated with him since she really wanted to come upstairs. She then admitted to us that she must have gotten out of the wrong side of the bed and when she went back down stairs she apologized to Granddad.

The weather was horrible so we had a lazy but playful day. Sadbh got dressed up as princess Anna and had her hair tied up in braids. Once she was all dressed up she got to talk to Ali-Baba and her cousins in Portland.
At one point she was helping Katie change Cillian’s nappy when she started telling him that he was her best friend forever. It was adorable.

Later Katie and I managed trach care and after that we loaded up the car and headed out for a drive to take care of a couple of errands.
Sadbh eventually fell asleep and snoozed comfortably for forty-five minutes or so.

She was full of beans and in a great mood when we arrived home and after dinner she spent the rest of the evening playing with Nana and Granddad in the basement.
She pretended that she had a breast pump and was pumping milk for her baby doll. Granddad was able to capture it on video and it was hilarious to watch.

Katie and I headed out to meet the gang for a friends birthday. Nana and Granddad looked after the two kids and it was almost ten by the time Sadbh finally went to sleep.
We are so lucky to have my parents here helping out and we can go out and be confident that Sadbh is in excellent hands.

Sadbh’s update – January 16, 2015

Sadbh woke up at half six and hung out with Jirapa until she could not wait any longer. In fairness she did wait an hour before finally coming up to see us. For once this week she only wanted me and did not have any interest in seeing Mommy or her little brother.
This worked out fine as Katie and Cillian needed a sleep in so I headed down stairs to sign out the nurse and get the day started for Sadbh.

Sadbh and I played for a while she pretended to be a baker selling cookies. We had a lot of fun but soon it was time for her to eat breakfast.

Our friend, Ian McKenna, came by for a quick visit and unfortunately Sadbh was shy. It was really good to see Ian.

After trach care we all headed out for a walk in the sunshine. It was a lovely evening so we decided to go to Nora’s Woods. Sadbh was excited and had Granddad chasing her around the woods pretending to be a bear.
From there we headed up to the lookout up in Madrona to check out the view of Lake Washington and Mt. Rainier. Sadbh did great walking and when her legs got tired she hopped up on the stroller and tagged a ride with her baby brother.

Bedtime was a piece of cake tonight and Sadbh was out like a light in seconds.

Sadbh had a good day over all. There were some challenges along the way and we are all figuring out the best way to deal with them as they happen.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie, Sadbh and Cillian.

Sadbh’s update – January 15, 2015

Sadbh woke up at half past six and greeted me with a huge smile and a bigger hug. I was then surprised when she apologized for “being a monster last night”.  We are not sure where she got this word, but we’ll be more careful what we say in front of her going forward.
Our morning was off to a wonderful start and when I asked if she was hungry for breakfast she said sure and headed out to the kitchen.

We had a much better day today and that was thanks in part to all the grown ups in the house being on the same page in managing Sadbh.

Ali-Baba came by to hang out for a while and Sadbh got to take turns reading books with Ali-Baba and Granddad.

After trach care Sadbh got to have quiet time. Since she did not want to nap she hung out in her room and looked at books and played with puzzles.

As soon as quite time was over we headed down to the basement to play with her toys and for the rest of the day she took turns having fun with each of us.
She even had Nana stretched out on the coffee table pretending to be a patient in her hospital.

After dinner we treated Sadbh to a movie and ice cream and by bedtime she was ready for sleep.
It did not take long to get her ready for bed but despite being completely tired it took a while for her to fall asleep.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie, Sadbh and Cillian.

Sadbh’s update – January 14, 2015

Sadbh woke up at seven, closer to her normal time. She came up and snuggled with Katie for another hour and was in a great mood.

Ali-Baba and Michelle came by for a visit today and Sadbh was over the moon to see them both.
She had a wonderful time catching up with Ali-Baba and she showed off her new toy from yesterday’s hospital visit.

Katie and I managed trach care in the early evening and spent a few hours playing with Sadbh while Cillian slept.
She had me pretending to be her horse and by the time she was done riding me around the house I was absolutely exhausted. She would not accept this and insisted on going for another few laps.

Around dinner things started to take a turn for the worse. Sadbh became very difficult and extremely combative. It was a very stressful evening for all three of us and I’m sure it was also quite difficult for my parents as they witnessed the mayhem.
Each battle ended with hugs, kisses and “I love yous” but the ceasefires were short lived and the ensuing battle would erode away at our nerves even further.
By bedtime Sadbh seemed to be in good spirits. Both she and I had spent half an hour playing with her horses in the basement and she was really enjoying herself. I gave her a count down to when playtime was going to end and when it was time to head upstairs to bed. She did not like this but headed up with minimum protest. Changing into her pajamas and going to the toilet were without incident but when it came time to brush her teeth the battle started up again. By now I was completely done in and Katie took over and got Sadbh off to bed as quickly as possible.
Sadbh fussed for fifteen minutes or so and finally fell into a deep sleep.

This morning while Sadbh was snuggled up with Katie in bed she kept saying how sad she is when she wakes up and is not with Mommy, Daddy and Cillian. It must be a very difficult transition for her and despite being really good for 90% of the day, it is getting very obvious that she is having a much harder time of it than she is putting on.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie, Sadbh and Cillian.
