Shortly after Mary arrived we brought her up to speed
on Sadbh’s condition and since Sadbh’s temperature was starting to rise we gave
her a dose of Ibuprofen. Sadbh was not happy with this but after some
persuasion she finally drank it down and went right back to sleep.
Her heart rate through the night was up and down and
by four thirty it was time to get her a dose of Tylenol. She slept soundly for
the rest of the night and did not stir when I took over from Mary at half past
six.
Her heart rate was up around 120 when it’s usually
down in the 80’s or 90’s and her respiration rate was a lot higher than normal.
Thankfully she did not have a temperature and she
slept on for another forty-five minutes before waking up with a huge smile.
I was peaking over the side of her bed when she woke
up and when she locked eyes on me she smiled and told me that she missed me so
much and that she loved me. It made my heart melt.
I had gotten her a toy mermaid over the weekend and
had stuffed it down inside my top. She could see the fin of the mermaid
sticking out and could not believe her eyes when she pulled it out to reveal
her new favorite toy.
Since she was still not 100 percent we figured that
it would be another pajama day and that she could stay in bed a little longer
than usual.
Her airway sounded very restricted so I gave her a
saline nebulizer and suctioned her trach until it was clear. The saline
nebulizer helped greatly and it loosened up her secretions so I could remove
them without any difficulty.
She was so excited when Mommy and Cillian joined us a
short while later and insisted that Cillian join her in bed for a snuggle.
The rest of her morning seemed to go well as she was
able to walk despite having a limp, and she had a massive appetite for
breakfast.
Katie was on the phone with Sadbh’s doctors office a
couple of times throughout the morning and since she was showing signs of
improvement we all figured it would be best to keep her at home under a
watchful eye.
When Mommy headed up stairs to get ready Sadbh wanted
to join her. She climbed the stairs, slowly, but without any assistance and
climbed into our bed as she waited for Katie.
Everything was looking great at first but it was not
long before she was having difficulty breathing and when Katie got to her she
was starting to turn blue. Katie quickly pulled Sadbh’s trach cap off and
suctioned her to clear the airway. She regained her complexion but became very
tired and dozed off to sleep. We checked her temperature and she was spiking at
102.4 and rising. It spiked really quickly so we gave her some Tylenol and
contacted her doctor’s office again. They were able to get us in immediately so
we loaded up and headed out the door as quickly as possible.
Sadbh looked very ill but was in a wonderful mood.
Her doctor gave her an examination and paid close attention to her leg and
hips. She was concerned of the possibly of a bacterial joint infection so we
elected to have some blood drawn so they could run tests.
Sadbh was not too excited about this but we talked
her through the process and when it came time for the nurse to poke her with a
needle we were all surprised when she did not flinch. She sat there and watched
as they drew two vials of blood from her arm and she only became upset when the
nurse placed a bandage on her arm.
I had already removed Sadbh’s trach cap and gotten
her suction machine on the ready as we had anticipated that she would get
upset. I was able to quickly clear her airway and then worked to calm her down.
The nurse had given her a couple of prizes for her
troubles and with the promise of some ice cream later she quickly dried off her
tears and was ready to head home. She never ceases to amaze me how brave she
can be when things get tough for her.
Once home and in a much better mood it was time to
Skype with Nana and Granddad back home. She was very excited to see them and
showed off her new mermaid and her story from her doctor’s visit.
Somehow she asked Granddad if he had a wig, since he
is bald, and before she knew it he returned to the computer with a novelty wig
he got from my brother. Sadbh thought that this was the funniest thing ever and
laughed her little head off.
The rest of the day was spent snuggling on the couch
and taking it easy.
When it came time for bed we set her up for trach
care first and then got her ready for sleep. She was out fairly quickly.
When Jirapa arrived we briefed her on Sadbh and how
the day went. We gave her a medicine timetable and discussed the schedule for
the night.
Sadbh’s temperature appears to be normal but she was
very sweaty.
Fingers crossed she is over the worst of it and that
tomorrow will be a much better day.
All
the best,
Wayne, Katie, Sadbh and Cillian
