Sadbh slept great through the night. Occasionally we would have to wake up to adjust her trach mist collar, or to give her a quick suction. But all in all, she did great.
Around 4am I got up to check on her since she was sounding restless, and as I was about to place her pacifier into her mouth she turned and snapped it out of my fingers with her mouth, despite it being pitch dark.
For a split second it felt like I was about to be bitten by a shark and was about to lose my whole hand in the process.
Sunday morning was no different than any other weekend morning.
You can’t beat waking up with Sadbh in the same room, and simply bringing her into bed for a cuddle and some playtime.
After we put Sadbh down for her mid morning nap, we had to tippy toe around the room so as not to wake her up.
We were successful for a while, until I walked past her at one stage only to look down and see this cheeky little monkey looking back up at me. At that point we knew nap time was over.
After completing trach care early in the day, we headed off to meet Sadbh’s roommate and her mother from when Sadbh was in recovery at Children’s.
They are both back in town for some follow up surgery, so we arranged to meet up with her mother for lunch close to where they are staying.
Unfortunately they were not able to make it, but it did give us a chance to head over to Katie’s mothers house since we were in the neighborhood.
Little did we know but Peggy had some friends over so Sadbh got to meet with Joyce and Bob. Everyone was excited to meet Sadbh, as she was to meet them. We are so lucky that she’s extremely social and doesn’t shy away from strangers. I suppose that’s what you get when you spend the first part of your life in hospital surrounded by new faces every ten minutes.
The rest of the evening was spent playing at home and getting ready for bed.
Our night nurse was almost 20 minutes late, and when she did arrive, she spent another 20 minutes in the kitchen cooking something to eat.
We have no issue with nurses using the fridge, microwave, kettle to heat up their food, but it’s not acceptable to use our pots and pans, stovetop to cook their lunches from scratch.
It’s like our housemate just showed up and started cooking herself dinner. In fact, she forgot to turn off the stove after using it, and only cleaned some of the kitchenware she used.
All the while, Katie is looking after Sadbh when she should be in bed resting for work the next morning.
We seriously need these nurses out of our lives for good.
Take care,
Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.
