Sadbh’s update – day 175

Around 4am this morning, the nurse called for Katie to come down to feed Sadbh, but when Katie got down there, all Sadbh needed was to be bundled up and rolled over to her other side.
It was another hour and a half before Sadbh actually woke up for breakfast.

Right after breakfast, Sadbh fell back into a deep sleep and didn’t wake up until 8am.
Her hand coordination is improving by the day. As soon as she woke up, she slipped her left arm out of her swaddle, reached over past her right shoulder, picked her pacifier up and put it into her mouth.

The plan for the day was to manage trach care early in the day, and then run errands in the afternoon.
Sadbh was in a very deep sleep for trach care, and this allowed my father and I to take care of business without any difficulty. Since she had such an energetic morning, we were optimistic that she would sleep for an hour or so, and this would allow us to get everything organized for the afternoon.
Unfortunately she did not sleep for long, and when she woke up, Princess Angry Bird had taken the place of happy little Sadbh.

It actually turned into a very stressful situation as Sadbh seemed to be wheezing and under some distress. I quickly suctioned her trach in the hope that it would clear whatever was causing the wheezing sound, but it did not sound any better by the time I was done.
Thinking that I might have placed her trach ties on to tightly, I loosened them up with the help of my father. This is not something you want to do with a child that is awake, not to mention irate. However this did not seem to solve the issue either.
By now, all three of us were stressed out to the max, and eventually Sadbh started to calm down.
With that, I heated a bottle of milk and my father took her in his arms and fed her.
Half way through the bottle she decided to spray the room with projectile vomit, putting an end to her feeding.
Oddly enough, she seemed to be much happier afterwards, so we put the whole experience down to gas and an upset stomach.

Since she was feeling much better, we headed out to take care of business and, after getting things done, we stopped off at Café Press for lunch.
Shortly after the food arrived, Sadbh had a melt down, similar to the one she had earlier on.
Grabbing the check, we headed home as quickly as we could and worked hard to get Sadbh comfortable again.

She quickly regained her composure and had a nice relaxing sleep. After she woke up, we spent the rest of the evening playing and having fun.
It was a huge contrast to the stress from earlier on in the day. I was very glad to have my dad around to help out today, without him I think it would have been so much harder.

Take care,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.
