Sadbh’s update – May 14th 2014

Thanks to Helen, Sadbh managed to tolerate her trach cap for 6 consecutive hours last night. She had a restless sleep and after six hours she simply pulled the trach cap off. Helen figured that Sadbh had enough so she replaced the cap with her guard and Sadbh slept soundly until 7:30.

As soon as she woke up I gave her a saline nebulizer and cleared her trach with a few suctions. She was in a very good mood and when Mommy popped into the room she got even more excited.

After breakfast it was time for learning. It was hard to hold her attention as she wanted her dolls but thankfully she was patient and went along with her exercises.

Sadbh’s friends Conor and Aibhin came by with their mommy for a visit and Sadbh could not wait to show off her new house. They had a wonderful time and the three kids did a wonderful job sharing toys and helping each other in and out of the house.

After a couple of hours Sadbh started to get very tired and at this point she would not do what she was asked. We both knocked heads and it was time for her to cool down.
It was getting close to Conor and Aibhin’s naptime so Aoife loaded the kids up for their stroll home. Sadbh did not want them to leave and got very sad as she said good-bye.

Sometimes, we realize the strangest things from this blog and the photos that we keep.  Apparently, this day, May 15th is an annual event and this is the 3rd year in the making!  For the last 3 years, on this day, Sadbh has had a playdate with her friends Conor and Aibhin (well, Aibhin was just a glimmer in her mommy's eye the first year).  Life is very funny and it repeats itself, often unbeknownst to us.  Its pretty cool to be able to look back and see these things from a larger perspective.  It helps us realize how lucky we are and what amazing friends we have.

The rest of the day was a struggle and although she was overly tired, she would not nap.

After dinner she quickly went to bed but it took forever for her to finally fall asleep            .
She did not want to wear her cap but Katie was able to motivate her into wearing it. Katie had been talking with some of her colleagues about how to motivate kids to potty train etc and came up with the idea of a sticker board in which Sadbh would receive a sticker for every night that she fell asleep with her trach cap on. Once the sticker board was full of stickers Sadbh would receive a gift. On hearing this Sadbh got very excited and started to talk about all the possible gifts that she could earn. She talked about new ponies (she is turning into a huge my little pony fan) new dolls, a new pink motorcycle so she could ride along with me and so on. Then she told Katie that she should leave the room so she could make the sticker board and within a few minutes she was fast asleep with her trach cap on.
You simply cannot beat positive motivation.
Earlier in the day Katie received a call from the medical supply company regarding an outstanding bill from January through March. She did not have time to update them yet again on our insurance coverage so I called them back after she let me know. We have explained our insurance policy to this company so many times.
I was placed on hold for almost half an hour and by the time I got through I wrote the customer care agent the riot act. After explaining our policies yet again she realized that they had the two insurance companies in the wrong order as primary and secondary.
It’s amazing to think that something as simple as mixing the two insurance companies can be such a difficult thing to figure out for them despite being told each time we have placed an order or dealing with billing issues.
No wonder the nickname for Apria is “Crapria” by a lot of their customers.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.
