Sadbh’s update – July 31st 2014

Sadbh managed to wear the PMV on her trach for almost seven hours. She woke up about half an hour before Helen’s shift ended and was not one bit pleased.

She was very attached to Mommy this morning and was extremely unhappy when Katie had to leave for work. It took almost an hour to calm her down and before she was happy again.
I managed to convince her that if she got dressed and came out for breakfast that we would head off to the beach as soon as she finished breakfast. This did the trick and soon we were heading down to Madison Park.

As we got ready the Blue Angels were practicing overhead. They buzzed by the house numerous times and Sadbh and Sophia were so excited with the loud sounds and sight of the planes flying by.
Sadbh kept calling them the “Blue Belle Angels” from a book she received from our friend Helen that contained a Blue Belle fairy named Bella that lived in our garden. It was so funny and every time a plane went by Sadbh would point and shout, “there is a blue belle angel”.

Our timing for the beach was perfect and it was not too packed. Sadbh was ready to get straight into the water and since I brought my swimming togs I was able to bring her out a little deeper than before.
We had so much fun building sandcastles on the shore and we even built a big pond running along side the castles.

We had a great time but all of a sudden we were surrounded by twenty or so young kids from a summer camp. Sadbh and I were literally smack bang in the middle of all these kids as they splashed each other and threw sand all over the place. This would normally be completely fine, but with a trach we had to finish up and get back onto dry land, fast.
Thankfully, Sadbh was fine with this and after a quick clean up it was time for lunch.

Trach care went very easy today and Sadbh was very content watching Curious George on my phone.
Shortly afterwards Mommy arrived home so we could take Sadbh to her acupuncture appointment. By now she was getting very tired and a little bit cranky but when it came time for her appointment she was fantastic.

Sadbh’s friends, Cormac and Clodagh, came by for a play date this evening and the three kids had a wonderful time playing in the garden.

Bedtime was so easy as Sadbh was completely and utterly wiped out from her hectic day.

Sadbh’s update – July 30th 2014

We tried a different approach to capping Sadbh’s trach while she slept. Helen was able to get Sadbh to tolerate her trach capped with her modified Passy Muir Valve (PMV) from shortly after 1am for almost six hours. This particular PMV is modified with a tiny pin hole to allow some relief when she exhales, otherwise it allows her to breath in but when she exhales she the exhaled air is forced out through her vocal cords and then through her mouth and nose.
It did become uncomfortable for her around quarter past seven and this woke her up.

Sadbh was a little cranky this morning and I had to work extra hard to get her happy.
After breakfast we headed down to Madison Park for a dip in the lake and Sadbh had a brilliant time throwing rocks into the water and building sand castles on the beach.

She was not happy to leave but the promise of lunch won her over and soon she was in a great mood again.

Once she had her belly filled it was time for a bath and then trach care. She wanted to nap afterwards but this was only a tease. She had no intention on napping and before long she was out of bed and playing with her toys.

The rest of her evening was normal and by bedtime she was like a zombie. Thankfully it did not take long to get her off to sleep.

Sadbh’s update – July 29th 2014

Sadbh slept soundly and managed her trach cap for almost half an hour. She woke up shortly after half past seven in a great mood and as soon as I had up out of bed she was off up stairs to see Mommy. Last night as Katie was putting Sadbh to bed Sadbh asked if Mommy could wear her hair in a plait and wear her glasses in the morning. First thing she said when she woke up was that she wanted to see Mommy with her plait and glasses on.

Sadbh had a great day playing out in the garden with Sophia. The weather in Seattle lately has been fantastic and despite all the sunshine Sadbh is able to stay cool in the back yard due to the shade from the trees. We are so lucky to be so close to the city but have a lush garden paradise for Sadbh to take full advantage of.

Trach care went well today and despite being tired Sadbh did not want to sleep afterwards. Sophia read a bunch of books to keep her entertained.

By dinnertime Sadbh was starting to get very cranky and it was an effort to get her to sit down to eat.

We had a very special visitor this evening. Molly, who was Sadbh’s nurse a couple of years ago, stopped by with her ten-month-old son, Carter. Sadbh was so excited to see her and especially excited to meet Carter. She kept saying how cute he was and was very quick to share her ponies with him. I was actually very impressed as she is not really that good at sharing.

Bedtime was much easier tonight and Sadbh was out for the count in no time at all.

Sadbh’s update – July 28th 2014

Sadbh had a great night but didn’t do too well with the trach cap. She woke up at half past seven but hung out in her bed for half an hour more.

She had a lovely morning and as soon as her breakfast was finally finished we headed down to Madison Park for a stroll. Sophia had never been so she was really excited to see the beach. Sadbh was very excited also and wanted desperately to go for a swim. Unfortunately for Sadbh I had not thought to bring swimming gear so her only option was to hang out and watch everyone else swimming.

When we got home it was time for trach care and as soon as we finished Sadbh wanted to take a nap. She slept for just over two hours and she would have kept on sleeping if I had not woken her up.
She was in a fantastic mood but was very curious as to what the noise was outside.
A friend of ours, Ronan, is helping build a deck and he was sanding down the steps at the back porch. As soon as Sadbh realized who was there she got very excited. I think she has developed a crush on Ronan over the past week and she could not wait to run out to say hello. She is going to be trouble when she gets older.

Bedtime was a nightmare tonight as the two-hour nap backfired. Sadbh would not go to sleep and eventually she finally dozed off 45 minutes after Helen arrived.

Sadbh’s update – July 27th 2014

Sadbh had yet another great night sleep but only managed twenty minutes with her trach capped.
Katie took over from Danielle and Sadbh slept on for two more hours.

I had a bunch of work to do on the house today so Sadbh headed to the beach at Seward Park with Mommy and Sophia. Her friends Clodagh, Cormac and Dylan were there and Sadbh could not wait.

Sadbh got to wear her pink two-piece bikini and after being slathered in sun block from head to toe she was off to play with her friends.
She had so much fun and even got to take a dip in the lake with Mommy and Sophia.

By the time they were done all the kids were getting very tired and cranky. When Sadbh got home it was time for a nice bath and trach care. Sophia helped out again and between her and Katie they got it done without any problems.

Bedtime was easy tonight as Sadbh was ready for sleep.

Sadbh’s update – July 26th 2014

Sadbh slept great and managed to wear her trach cap for twenty minutes.
Katie took over from Danielle at six and thankfully Sadbh slept in for another hour and a half. She was delighted to see Mommy when she woke up and was quick to get out of bed.

She had a fantastic day playing with Mommy and Sophia and later in the morning Ali-Baba stopped by to join in.

Sophia helped Katie out with trach care and afterwards Sadbh was ready to take a nap. Unfortunately she had too much fun with Ali-Baba and decided that a nap was the last thing that she wanted.
The next few hours were not pretty as Sadbh was delirious and very difficult. It was fairly exhausting but eventually we were able to calm her down in time to head out to visit Clodagh and Cormac for dinner.

As expected, she fell asleep in the car not long after leaving the house. Since we did not have far to go so Sadbh only slept for a few minutes. This was fine as she was excited to be visiting her friends and soon she was having a great time.

She had a wonderful evening and by the time she got home she was completely and utterly wiped out.
We were getting worried about getting Sadbh to sleep since it was getting very close to Danielle’s arrival time however as she was out as soon as her head hit her pillow.

Sadbh’s update – July 25th 2014

Sadbh wore her trach cap for 47 minutes last night and overall had a very restful night.
She woke up shortly after Danielle’s shift ended but I managed to get her back to sleep for another hour and a half.

Sadbh had a fun day and spent it taking turns playing with Sophia and me.
It never ceases to amaze me how much energy she has and despite all the running and racing she never seems to slow down.

Sophia has become an expert at trach care and today we were able to get it done without any problems. Sadbh enjoys the stories that Sophia tells her and this makes it so much easier.

Despite not napping today Sadbh was still not ready for bed when it came time. Instead she had Sophia read a few stories but as soon as she was finished Sadbh kissed everyone and headed off to bed.

Sadbh’s update – July 24th 2014

Sadbh had a very restless night and in order to keep from waking her up Helen chose not to cap her trach.
She woke up in a great mood around half past seven and just hung out in her bed for a while until she was finally ready to wake up.

It was a lot quieter in the house this morning with Hayato gone but this did not stop Sadbh from having fun. She had a nice big breakfast and was soon playing with a bunch of her toys in her room.

She had a great day and after lunch Sophia and I got trach care out of the way. Sadbh was a little tired and since it was raining we jumped into the car and went for a spin around Capitol Hill. Sadbh wanted me to pretend that I was Tiger the dog, Kipper’s friend, so I had to talk to her in a British accent while I drove. This worked a treat and soon she was fast asleep.

Later in the evening the fun and games continued and Sadbh kept both Sophia and I very busy. Sophia did a great job trying to keep up and the two girls had a wonderful evening together.

Before dinner Sadbh asked Mommy if her friend Dylan could come over. She really likes Dylan and when Mommy showed her a photo of him she turned and said “I’m going to marry him”, very matter of factly.

Bedtime tonight came fairly easy as Sadbh was tired.

Sadbh’s update – July 23rd 2014

Sadbh had a great night sleep but refused to wear her trach cap. She woke up shortly after eight and was greeted by her cousin Hayato. As soon as she saw him she smiled from ear to ear. It was so cute to watch and for the rest of the morning she was right by his side.

Sadbh and Hayato had breakfast together and as soon as she finished hers they were off playing through the house.
Sophia joined in shortly afterwards and the three kids had a wonderful time.

Unfortunately Hayato had to return home to Portland and Sadbh was sad to see him go.
She was worn out from such a hectic morning but managed to stay awake while we headed out to run some errands.

Sophia and I managed trach care as soon as we returned home and since Sadbh was still very tired I hoped that she would take a well-deserved nap. This was not going to happen as Sadbh suddenly got a blast of energy and wanted to play some more.

Sadbh had a great evening and was very goofy by the time Mommy came home from work.
By bedtime she was extremely tired and was out like a light in no time at all.

Sadbh’s update – July 22nd 2014

Helen capped Sadbh’s trach for nine minutes before Sadbh pulled it off. She waited until she was back in a deep sleep and tried again only to receive a performance from Sadbh that was deserving of an Oscar.

She woke up just before 8 and was in a very good mood. She did not want me at first and kept asking for Mommy. She eventually came around and I had her laughing hard in her bed as I tickled her belly.

Sadbh had a great morning playing with Sophia and after lunch we headed downtown to the waterfront and the sculpture park. While there we could see a train hooking up to it’s carriages and when the engineer saw Sadbh she waved and blew the train horn. Sadbh was so excited and did not want to leave.

Later in the afternoon Ali-Baba, Kirk and Hayato came by. Sadbh was so excited to see her cousin and for the rest of the evening they were inseparable. She is so in love with Hayato and he had her laughing so hard that I had to remove her trach cap at one stage, as she could not breathe properly.

After dinner we headed out for a walk and some ice cream. The fun and laughter continued and by the time Sadbh got home she was completely wiped out.

Sadbh’s update – July 21st 2014

Sadbh slept soundly until half past seven and hung out in her bed until shortly after eight. She had a very good night but would not allow Danielle to cap her trach.

Sadbh was so excited to have Sophia back after her weekend camping. She had no interest in spending any time with me and spent the entire day playing with Sophia.

In the early afternoon Sophia and I managed trach care and afterwards I tried to get Sadbh down for a nap. She was quite tired but was too interested in hanging out with Sophia to go to sleep.

She even got to Skype with my cousin Declan and his wife Tanya in England before scurrying off outside to play with Sophia.

After Mommy got home from work we loaded up the car and headed down to Seward Park for pizza. Sadbh was quite cranky by now and the only thing that would keep her happy was to plug her in to the phone to watch Curious George.

Bedtime was so much easier tonight and Sadbh was out cold in no time whatsoever.

Sadbh’s update – July 20th 2014

Sadbh slept great and woke up at 7:30 and ready to go. I had taken over from Danielle at 6 and thankfully Sadbh did not require any suctioning throughout the night.

As soon as she woke up she wanted to head up to wake Mommy up. There was no holding her back and as soon as she was disconnected from her equipment she was dragging me up the stairs to play with Mommy.

I had a busy morning so after breakfast Sadbh spent the time playing with Mommy and Pat.
In the afternoon Katie and I managed trach care and as soon as we finished up we loaded up the car and headed up to visit Ali-Baba, Kirk and Hayato.
Earlier in the day while Ali-Baba and Hayato were walking through the local woods Ali-Baba accidentally stepped on a wasp nest. Within a few seconds they were surrounded by wasps and poor Ali-Baba received at least ten stings.
Sadbh was all excited to see Ali-Baba and wanted to find out more about her encounter with the wasps. She was fascinated and very concerned with Ali-Baba’s recovery.

On our way home we stopped off to see our friends Will and Sarah and their kids Conor and Brandon. Sadbh found a few toys that kept her busy for a while until Will started playing the piano. Sadbh soon joined in and almost looked like she knew what she was doing.

Sophia arrived home from her camping trip and Sadbh was over the moon to see her. We headed out to dinner on Capitol Hill and Sophia kept Sadbh entertained.

When we returned home, Pat was washing her hands in the bathroom sink and realized that one of her rings fell off. It was a special ring, her mom, Laura’s engagement ring.  Sadbh was nearby and she said, “I have an idea!  Let’s get a really, really long hook.”  It was a good idea indeed, but l already had the sink apart and luckily we found the ring easy enough.  We were all very happy and relieved.

Bedtime was very easy this evening and Sadbh was asleep moments before Danielle arrived.

Sadbh’s update – July 19th 2014

Sadbh woke up from laughing in her sleep. Apparently she had dream that involved a silly doll and a silly bird. It seems they were dancing or something.  It was around half past six and she was after having a good night sleep.

Sadbh helped Mommy make pancakes for breakfast and as soon as she was done she wanted Pat to read her a few of her favorite books.
She was so happy sitting on the couch with Pat and refused to get changed out of her pajamas until she had another few books read to her.

By noon she was getting tired so Katie and I managed trach care. I thought that she might take a nap afterwards but she got another blast of energy.

Sadbh, Mommy and Pat headed downtown for the afternoon and Sadbh fell asleep in the car. She napped for about 45 minutes and woke up in time to see a beautiful macaw at the market. Maybe the funny dream she had this morning was a premonition for what she was to encounter later in the day.

Sadbh had a great afternoon and was delighted when I came downtown to pick everyone up.
Later, when I was kissing Sadbh good night she said “thank you for picking me up, and Mommy and Pat”. It was such a funny thing for her to say.

Sadbh’s update – July 18th 2014

Sadbh slept well and did not require any suctioning. Unfortunately she only managed 10 minutes with her trach being capped but slept soundly until shortly after half past six.

We had a busy morning and Sadbh enjoyed hanging out with Sophia before she headed off camping for the weekend.

Sadbh had an appointment with Dr. Cavanaugh today and he worked on releasing the tension in her rib cage to allow her to breathe easier and also worked on the vertebra to relieve the tension in her neck.

On the way home Sadbh and I stopped off at Trader Joes to pick up some shopping and it did not take long before she found Kangaroo Joey. She was delighted and even more excited to get her treat.

Later in the morning we headed out for a walk through the neighborhood and down to Plum Tree Park. Sadbh was not very patient but was over the moon when we finally arrived. Along the way we stumbled across a fork that was discarded on the street and Sadbh got excited and called out that she found a “Dingle Hopper” (from the movie The Little Mermaid).

We had a lot of fun at the park but Sadbh wore me out. Her imagination ran wild and she did not want to leave. After an hour of non-stop fun it was finally time to head home so Sadbh reluctantly climbed into the wagon and off we went.

Once home it was time for a nice bath. She really enjoyed playing in the tub with all her bath toys and as usual she did not want the fun to end.
She was getting tired so as soon as she was dried off and dressed I put her in bed for a nap. We were both tired as I also fell asleep and we slept for over two hours.

Sadbh had a fun evening as her cousin, Hayato, and Katie’s stepmother, Pat came by for a visit. Ali-Baba and Kirk also came by and Sadbh did not know what to do with all the excitement and attention.

When it came time for bed it took almost two hours before she finally dropped off to sleep. Danielle had to wait out in the living room while Mommy got Sadbh to sleep.

Sadbh’s update – July 17th 2014

Sadbh had a good night but would not allow Helen to cap her trach. Her lungs sounded good and thankfully she did not need any suctioning.

She woke up in a great mood and was happy when Mommy came into her room to greet her.

Sadbh and I had a really good day and Sadbh ate so much food throughout the day. It’s been a while since I’ve seen her finish off a plate of food completely and today she had at least five large meals.

We had an appointment for Sadbh with her acupuncturist this afternoon and Sadbh was all excited to go. She lay down on the bench and did everything asked of her by Brenda. She did such a great job that we were out the door within twenty minutes.

We stopped by Clodagh and Cormac’s on the way home to pick up Sophia and Sadbh got a chance to play with her friends. By now she was getting very tired and she was not too pleased when it came time to head home.

After dinner Sadbh was having so much fun playing that she did not want to go to get ready for bed.  She was over tired and when it was finally time she put up a big fight.  Mommy won and sleep came easy once she was in bed.
Danielle is working tonight and I hope she can get to cap Sadbh’s trach.

Sadbh’s update – July 16th 2014

Helen managed to cap Sadbh’s trach for 39 minutes before Sadbh pulled it off. She was not under distress and her sats were normal. It would seem that she was just not happy having her trach capped and as soon as it was off she slept soundly until shortly after Helen left.

She had a fun morning and was excited for Ali-Baba to come by for a tea party later in the morning. Sadbh, Ali-Baba and Sophia all enjoyed tea and treats out on the back porch.

Later in the day Sophia helped out with trach care and kept Sadbh entertained with stories of horse riding and finding more rats. Sadbh is fascinated with rats at the moment, I’m not sure why.

Sadbh was tired this afternoon but would not take a nap. She had a good evening for the most part but became a little whiney as the day went on.
By bedtime she was ready for sleep and enjoyed a few bedtime stories from Mommy.

Sadbh’s update – July 15th 2014

Sadbh had a great night rest and only needed to be suctioned once during the night. It took a few attempts to get her airway clear but Helen was soon successful and Sadbh continued sleeping soundly.

She woke up happy but looking for Mommy shortly after half past seven. I was obviously not good enough and she waited patiently until Mommy came down to her.

Sadbh needed a saline nebulizer later in the morning and quite a bit of suctioning. At first she did not want to and the more she got upset the more secretions she generated. As soon as I was able to get the nebulizer collar on I was able to work on getting her calm and before long we were having a good time making each other laugh.

Conor and Aibhin came by for a play date and all three kids headed down to Sadbh’s house at the bottom of the garden. It was nice and cool in the shade and they all had a lot of fun.
Sharing toys is still an issue with Sadbh and there were times where she did good and others that were not so good.

After her friends left we headed inside for trach care. Sophia helped out again and did an even better job today. Sadbh was also very helpful and did everything I asked making trach care go as smoothly as possible.

She was looking tired after trach care but she did not want to go down for a nap. Instead she had a fun afternoon playing and reading books with Sophia.

Bedtime was easier since she had not napped and Sadbh was fast asleep long before Helen’s shift started.

Sadbh’s update – July 14th 2014

Sadbh slept well but needed suctioning a couple of times during the night. I took over from Danielle at 6 and Sadbh slept on soundly for two more hours. She was in a great mood when she woke up and soon she was having breakfast with Sophia.

We had a busy morning after Mommy left for work. We headed out to run a few errands and on the way home we stopped off to get some groceries. Sadbh had fun with Sophia and could not wait to find Trader Joey and to get her reward.

When we got home it was time for lunch and since Sadbh had worked up a big appetite it was not too difficult to get her to eat her lunch.

Sophia helped me with trach care today and she kept Sadbh entertained with a story about a rat that she found on her grandfathers farm back in Germany. It is so funny what keeps Sadbh’s interest while we do trach care, but thankfully it works.
Sophia was very nervous but she did a wonderful job. Before she knew it we were done and Sadbh was asking to take a nap.
She asked to sleep with her trach cap on and slept for almost two hours.

When she woke up the first words that came out of her mouth was “dingle hopper” from the movie “The Little Mermaid”. She was laughing so hard and when I asked if that’s what she was dreaming about she scoffed and said “no, that’s silly”.

As soon as Sadbh was out of bed and dressed we both headed out in to the back yard and played with her ponies. I had no choice.
We had a lot of fun and it was interesting being subjected to her wild and fascinating imagination.

Soon Sophia and Mommy were home and it was time for dinner. We ate out in the garden and unfortunately for Sadbh she took too long and a couple of pesky wasps ended up chasing us back indoors.

Nevertheless we bundled up Sadbh’s equipment into her red wagon and headed off up the street to get ice cream. She was delighted with her selection and she took her sweet time walking home.

It took a while for her to fall asleep tonight, as she wanted to wear her trach cap to sleep. She tried really hard, but she eventually told Katie it was “owie”, so Katie took it off and soon Sadbh was fast asleep.

Sadbh’s update – July 13th 2014

Sadbh had an interesting night. According to Danielle she needed quite a bit of suctioning and was under some distress at one stage. When Katie took over at 6am she noticed that Sadbh’s mist collar was attached incorrectly and that it had a triple knot rather than using the snap fitting. It took Katie almost twenty minutes to untie the knot when she went to remove the mist collar and in the case of an emergency this would have proven to be disastrous. We plan to have a serious conversation tonight when Danielle arrives to discuss.

Sadbh had a great morning and after a saline nebulizer and numerous suctions she was ready to get the day started.
We were planning on heading over to our friends to watch the World Cup finals so Katie and I got trach care out of the way just before we headed out.
Sadbh was delighted to be heading to her friends and apart from a few little fights over sharing toys they all had a great time.
The highlight of the day was when the kids got to play with the garden hose out in the back garden of Michael and Roseanne’s house.
Katie and I gave in to our reservations and let Sadbh join in on the fun. It was extremely stressful since we did not want her to get her trach and trach ties wet but the fun she had made it all worthwhile. She had a smile on her face that stretched from ear to ear.
When she finally finished up we had to change out the Polymem dressing from around her trach and thankfully she allowed us to do so without putting up a fuss.

Sadbh had about as much fun as she could handle and when we left she soon fell asleep. She was out for the entire trip home and woke up just in time for dinner.

She had a good evening but when it came time for bed it took forever to get her to sleep but thankfully she finally fell asleep just before Danielle arrived.

For the last few months Katie and I have been discussing surgical options to resolve her vocal cord issue. As we allow Sadbh to do things that push our comfort levels we realize how much she has been missing out as we shelter her in the effort to protect her trach and her from catching colds and the likes.
