Sadbh slept soundly until just after
4am and was very hungry when Katie came down. Thankfully she dropped off to
sleep once she was done eating and slept until 7:30.
She had a huge appetite for breakfast
and ate everything that was placed in front of her.
Once she was done eating, it was time
for the fun and games to start.
Destiny was working again today, so
Sadbh had plenty of people to keep her occupied.
Ali-Baba stopped by for a quick visit
and Sadbh was delighted to see her.
When it came time for trach care,
Sadbh first had her bath and she had a great time. She had everyone laughing at
the sight of her sucking on her bath toys. She is quite the character.
Trach care went well for Nini and
Destiny, and Sadbh slept for over an hour afterwards.
Nini has become quite the expert at
trach care and her confidence is improving with every day.
The weather was great again today, so
after Sadbh woke up and had lunch, she got to practice riding her tricycle in
the back yard. Her trike was a great distraction, so Nini tested out the Passy
Muir Valve.
Sadbh struggled at first, but
eventually she started to maintain well enough to last another few minutes on
the PMV.
Later on, Sadbh and her entourage got
to go for a walk throughout the neighborhood. The walk started off with Sadbh
actually walking and not riding along in her stroller. She loved walking and
managed to get a few blocks in before getting tired. As soon as Nini placed her
in her stroller, Sadbh fell asleep immediately.
She slept for almost an hour and once
she woke up she was in a great mood.
Her timing was perfect as I had just
arrived home from work on my bike. She wasn’t sure what was going on at first
since I had my helmet on and she could not see my face through the dark visor,
but as soon as I removed the helmet, I received the biggest smile ever.
Sadbh’s evening was spent playing and
having as much fun as she could manage.
She was in the middle of dinner when
Katie arrived home and as soon as she heard Katie come through the door, she
lost her appetite and wanted to climb into her mummy’s arms as fast as
possible.
It was a year ago today when Sadbh finally left the NICU and down to the recovery ward.
When it came time for bed, Sadbh
received a visit from the tickle monster and I’ve never seen or heard Sadbh
laugh so hard. Despite having a trach and being unable to make sounds through
her vocal cords, the sounds of laughter coming through her trach were more
powerful than anything. It was a fun and uplifting moment for all three of us.
These are the moments that make us
feel like everything is going to be ok.
Sadly, this is even more real since
we learned this morning of a child who pulled her trach out last night while
her parents were preoccupied.
Unfortunately, she passed away only after eight minutes of being out of
her parent’s sight. Our thoughts
are with this family.
After reading about this poor little
girl, we were reminded of how lucky we are. However, we also know that we cannot
get too comfortable with our situation and we can never take chances. Now that
Sadbh is getting bigger, stronger, and has a strong personality, we need to
make sure that her trach ties are always secure and that she is never out of
sight for long.
Take care,
Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.
