Sadbh’s update – day 271 January 7th, 2012

It was a very rough night last night and no one got much sleep.
Poor Sadbh was coughing like crazy throughout the night and had to be suctioned constantly. She also needed to have her pajamas changed out quite a few times since she was sweating so much, and in the morning she started throwing up after each feeding.

Her day was very much the same and she was in a great deal of discomfort.

Peggy and Kirk came by to meet up with my father and Peggy helped my father manage trach care. Sadbh slept throughout, but was wide awake afterwards and was looking to be cuddled.

Eventually she fell asleep in my arms, so I left her sleep there for almost an hour before putting her up to her bed, where she slept for another 45 minutes or so.

It was heartbreaking to see his in such a way, and especially hard to see her puking up everything she ate.

She fell asleep in Katie’s arms for another hour or so, and when she awoke, she seemed very disorientated.
However, after a few minutes, she seemed to regain her composure and was ready for another feeding.
This time she kept all her food down and afterwards she was ready to play on the floor with some of her toys.
It was quite the transformation.
She was in great sprits throughout the rest of the evening, despite her heart rate and temperature still being high.

In the couple of hours since we put her to bed, we have been up at least ten times to check on her as she’s been tossing and turning.

At one point when I checked in on her, I noticed that she was boiling up, so I took her temperature and she was 101.5 degrees.

We quickly gave her water to drink along with Tylenol and a lot of cuddling. Within half an hour she had dropped down to 98.8 and was a little bit more comfortable.
I know we are in for another sleepless night.

Every parent goes through this and we are grateful that things are not worse. What makes this situation more stressful is the constant need for us to suction her trach so we can avoid a potential mucus plug and as a result, her suffocating. And the fact that we are constantly aware of her elevated heart rate, this causes us additional stress.

We did teach her how to “high five” today, and she is starting to use baby sign a little more each and every day.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.
