Sadbh’s update – day 273 January 9th, 2012

Sadbh had a much better night’s sleep. She did wake up around 2am and needed to be held before falling back to sleep, and at one stage she had a coughing fit that lasted over 45 minutes.
Afterwards, she fell into a deep sleep for the rest of the night and didn’t wake up until I was getting ready to head out to work.

Right after she had her breakfast, she started another coughing fit and we were worried that it would result in her breakfast coming back up.
Fortunately her breakfast stayed where it was, however she was coughing non-stop for quite some time, and this was also causing her a great deal of distress.

Thankfully, I was able to work from home today, and this proved to be a good decision since we were able to manage trach care when Sadbh was eventually ready for sleep.

She was exhausted, so my father and I gave her a nice bath. She enjoyed it so much that she didn’t want to leave.
After she was dried off and bundled up for bed, she dropped off into a deep sleep immediately.
Trach care was a little bit stressful as she was very restless.  I’m glad we did it, though as you could tell that her skin under her trach ties was starting to break down in parts.
I was able to clean everything thoroughly, and then dusted her neck with Nystatin topical powder to prevent bacteria and fungus from developing.

Afterwards, she slept for two hours straight in the deepest sleep since before her humidifier malfunctioned early last week.

She was definitely groggy when she woke up, but soon afterwards she was full of beans and ready for food and then some playtime.

Ali-Baba came over around noon and both she and my father took Sadbh out for a quick walk through the neighborhood.
Apparently she was delighted to be out of the house for a while, and even fell asleep shortly before arriving home.

She continued to show signs of improvement throughout the day and it seemed that her cough had gone away also.

She was more than ready for sleep when it came bedtime, however as soon as we put her down, the coughing started back up.
We also noticed a rash on her stomach, back and around her neck and chin, but we are hoping that it’s nothing serious.
I’m sure our night nurse Larissa will have an idea what it is and will be able to give us some suggestions as to how to remedy it.

Take care,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.
