Sadbh slept fine all night, but woke
up a few times and eventually joined us in bed. She was quite sweaty throughout
the night and had to be changed a couple of times since her pajamas were
soaking.
She was so happy when she finally
woke up, and so were we since she allowed us to sleep in for a while.
It’s great waking up to such a happy
little girl.
Sadbh had a nice big breakfast and
got to watch her baby signing times DVD a couple of times.
Today was her scheduled monthly trach
change, and today we were moving up from a neonatal trach to a pediatric trach.
We figured it was best to get her nice and tired so she would sleep through the
whole ordeal. As a result, we had a fantastic morning full of fun and games.
She really enjoyed herself and was so full of energy.
When it came time for trach care, she
was very tired and fell into a nice deep sleep after she was done splashing
around in her bath.
Everything went great, until it we
removed the medical tape that I had placed over her neck sores from the night
before. She got very upset and woke up from her deep sleep. The plan was to
remove the tape from her sores, and after cleaning her neck, we would replace
with new tape that would allow the sores to heal faster.
Sadbh had no interest in going back
to sleep anytime soon, so we had our work cut out for us getting trach ties
back on.
Since we had her room sanitized and
all the equipment set up for her trach change, we wanted to complete the task
today rather than waiting until tomorrow.
After some serious effort, Katie
managed to get Sadbh off to sleep and we were back in action.
Sadbh fell back into a deep sleep so
everything started off great. We removed her trach ties, the polymem and got
her ready for her new trach.
On the count of three, Katie removed
her old trach and I went to insert her new trach. It wouldn’t go in. For some
reason or other, I could not get the trach in through the opening.
Immediately Sadbh woke up and started
to cry and started to move her head from side to side. As you could imagine,
this did not help the situation one bit.
Katie was ready to suction and once
she realized that the new trach was not in, she looked right at me and
encouraged me to try again.
I pushed it in, using more force than
before and thankfully this time we were successful. Sadbh fell back into a deep
sleep, her blood oxygen level remained at 100% and we were all able to breath a
sigh of relief.
That happened to be the hardest trach
change that I have ever had to deal with, and I nearly passed out with the
stress of it all.
Sadbh slept for another hour or so
and after she woke up we headed over to visit Ali-Baba and Kirk to see their
new condo.
Sadbh loved it and was delighted
hanging out with Ali-Baba and her friend Joyce.
Later we headed over to Roosevelt to
meet up with Sean and Meghan for dinner and Sadbh had a lot of fun. Even though
it was getting close to her bedtime, she was in her element hanging out and
flirting with everyone who gave her attention.
Within a couple of minutes of getting
strapped into her car seat, Sadbh was in a deep sleep for the night. She had
quite the exciting day and thankfully everything worked out well.
This day last year was when we got to bring Sadbh home from the hospital. It was obviously a great day for the three of us, and every day since has been better than the day before. We have come a very long way and, despite the occasional hiccup, Sadbh is getting stronger and is developing leaps and bounds.
Take care,
Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.
