Sadbh’s update – August 31st, 2012

Sadbh slept really well last night and woke up at 5:15. She and Audrey played for awhile until Katie came down.
Destiny started her shift at 6am and helped us take care of Sadbh while we packed up her supplies and all our gear for our trip to Lake Chelan.

It was a busy morning between meeting two different contractors and a potential new nurse.
As soon as the last appointment of the morning was about to start, Sadbh looked like she was about to fall asleep, so Destiny brought her outside for a walk around the street.
It paid off and as soon as we were done with the second contractor, Sadbh was ready for trach care.
She had a nice relaxing bath and immediately afterwards she fell into a deep sleep.
Katie and Destiny managed trach care and Sadbh slept on for a couple of hours afterwards.

The hope was to hit the road by 1pm, however, it took us a lot longer than planned and we ended up leaving the house at 3:30.  We were so lucky to have Destiny there to help us and Sadbh was delighted since she got to have so much fun.

The trip to Lake Chelan is approximately three and a half hours, however, about fifty miles outside of Seattle we hit the worst traffic ever. It took us almost two hours to travel five miles and Sadbh was upset the entire time. I was trying to keep her calm in the back of the car while Katie drove, but Sadbh kept making the sign for mommy.
After an hour or so we switched places only for Sadbh to make the sign for daddy once Katie was sitting next to her.
Unfortunately it took another hour for her to finally calm down and eventually she fell asleep.

It was late when we finally arrived at Lake Chelan and since we were the last ones to arrive, our friends rallied and helped off load the car. It was empty within five minutes despite taking a couple of hours to load up earlier in the day.

Sadbh woke up and was able to enjoy a late dinner and got to hang out with Clodagh and Luna briefly.

When it came time for bed though, Sadbh was overly tired and very energetic. I have a feeling that its going to be a rough night.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – August 30th, 2012

Sadbh slept like a log last night and Larissa only had to suction three times.
She woke up around 3am and did the baby sign for daddy. Thankfully she dropped back to sleep and did not wake until 7:15am.

Nadia was working today and Sadbh had a great morning.
She was ready for her nap around 11 so I headed home to help out with trach care. Nadia had taken care of the bath, dried her off and had her asleep by the time I arrived home.
Nadia cleaned while I held, which was a first for me. Sadbh was in a deep sleep and did not wake for two and a half hours.

It was time to head out for a long walk after Sadbh woke up. Once they reached the park, Sadbh and Nadia had a picnic. The both had a great time and Sadbh filled her belly on all sorts of yummy healthy food.

I arrived home from work just as they arrived back from the park and Sadbh was grinning from ear to ear.
Nadia is heading back to visit her family in Russia tomorrow morning for a month and she was beside herself with excitement. On her way out the door, she doubled back and gave Sadbh a big kiss.

Sadbh had a fun evening and we checked out all the spiders in our garden. She is fascinated with spiders right now and can spot them a mile away.
The fun continued after Katie arrived home.
When it came time for bed, Katie told Sadbh that Audrey was working tonight and immediately Sadbh made the baby sign for Audrey.
She also explained to Sadbh that she would be going on a trip with a few of her little friends to Lake Chelan and the news proved to be too exciting for Sadbh. She would not go to sleep and kept making the sign for each of her friend’s names.
She eventually passed out and fell asleep in the corner of her crib with her arm up in the air against the rails.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – August 29th, 2012

Sadbh slept much better last night but still had lots of secretions. Larissa was fairly busy suctioning through the night.
At one stage Sadbh woke up shortly after 5am and when Larissa went over to check on her she curled up and pretended to be sleeping.
Once I came down the stairs, it was game time and Sadbh wanted Katie and to be nursed.

As Katie nursed, Sadbh filled the room with an eye-watering aroma, only to be followed by the mother of all nappy blowouts. It leaked right through everything and even through to Katie’s pants.

Once Sadbh was all cleaned up and in fresh clothes, it was time for the fun and games to start.
Katie had her laptop open and Sadbh was thrilled to see photos of Nini that she had posted in Facebook during her trip to NY.

The nurse that was scheduled to work today had called in sick and fortunately Audrey was available to fill in. Sadbh was delighted as soon as Audrey walked in the door and both of them immediately started to play and dance.
She had a very busy morning between blowing bubbles, flying around the house in the laundry basket, bouncing on her inflatable horse named Rody.
Later on Ali-Baba stopped by to help with trach care, but beforehand she got to read a few books to Sadbh.

Trach care was very straightforward and Sadbh slept for two and a half hours afterwards.

Once she woke up it was time for lunch and then a walk through the neighborhood. Sadbh wore her Passy Muir Valve and made a lot of sounds.
The fun and games continued once they arrived home and Sadbh had a great time in the back garden playing with her kitchen.

I arrived home and caught Sadbh dancing like crazy. She was smiling from ear to ear and it was quite the sight to behold.
Despite not having a second nap, Sadbh was in a great mood for the rest of the evening.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – August 28th, 2012

Sadbh had a very restless night and needed to be suctioned constantly. Thankfully her sats (oxygen saturation levels) were good and Larissa was able to keep her comfortable and asleep.

Nadia was working solo today.  Sadbh was in a good mood throughout the day and when it came time for her nap, Ali-Baba helped out with trach care.

It was a very different day today compared to yesterday and Sadbh was much more relaxed and comfortable.

Sadbh was getting very anxious this evening as we waited for Katie to arrive home from work, so in an effort to distract her I inadvertently let her down and as a result I feel terrible.
I let her watch Teletubbies and she loved it. I watched how it sucked her in and she was instantly addicted.
I feel like I just introduced my precious little girl to a serious drug in an effort to distract her and I’m ashamed. I can guarantee that she will be going cold turkey and I will do everything in my power to prevent her from watching that show again. I suppose it beats watching Barney.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – August 27th, 2012

Sadbh slept like a log and did not budge once during the night. Despite having a lot of secretions, Larissa only had to suction her trach once and her blood oxygen level never dropped below 99%.

Her check in appointment with Dr. Inglis was scheduled for 6:45am and thankfully she slept until almost 6:15. She was in a great mood when she woke up. We gathered all her equipment, loaded her into her car seat while she was in her pajamas and headed out to the hospital.
Since she had to fast prior to her surgery, we had to keep her distracted and her mind off of food.
On the way to the hospital she managed to find a pair of medical gloves and she instinctively put one on each hand. She was having a ball in the car and could not stop laughing.

Once we were checked in, she started to make the sign for food so the game of distraction had to be intensified.
This was easy to manage, especially each time a nurse or the anesthesiologist came by to check in on her.
When Dr. Inglis stopped by she blew him a few kisses. He was smitten of course and was lost for words. She is such a charmer.

When it came time to go away, Katie put on a sterile suit and carried Sadbh off to the theater. There the anesthesiologist put Sadbh under and off she went to the operating room.

The procedure was scheduled to take twenty minutes with a meeting with Dr. Inglis fifteen minutes later. After an hour or so of waiting you could only imagine how nervous we were.
Dr. Inglis arrived in the meeting room and informed us that everything went according to plan and that he was successful in removing the granuloma and administering the Botox into her vocal cords.
He was surprised how much granuloma had built up since the last time, but after removing it he was satisfied with the opening in her airway.
Her vocal cords were closing tightly, however he could not tell if they were opening enough to clear her airway since she was sedated.
In this photo, the top left hand photo is of the vocal cords in a shut position, on the top right they are spread open.
The bottom left image is the granuloma before it was lasered off as per the final image.

With the granuloma removed and the Botox allowing the vocal cords to remain open temporarily, the hope is that her airway will be open enough so we can start to use the Passy Muir Valve as much as possible so she can develop her speech. It will also allow us to test capping her trach to see how she manages inhaling.

After finishing up with Dr. Inglis, it was time to head down to the post-op room and await the arrival of our little girl.
Sadbh was brought in, bawling her eyes out, being comforted by one of the nurses. As soon as she saw Katie she nearly jumped across the room into her arms.
She was still very groggy after the anesthesia but she did nurse for a short while before falling back to sleep in Katie’s arms.
At one point her blood oxygen and pulse started to drop signaling the alarms, however we could tell by her complexion and appearance that everything was ok. It was a bit startling at first, however Sadbh was comfortable and in a deep sleep without a care in the world.

Eventually she came to and it was time for her to be discharged. She was still a little bit out of it but her mood was good and she was very happy as we left the hospital.

Her appetite today was off and rather than eat a few meals throughout the day she grazed instead. Her mood was also up and down, but it was understandable since she had gone through so much this morning.

After playing for a while, it was time for a nap and trach care. We had originally planed on a trach change this coming weekend, but since the ENT team were removing her trach during the procedure this morning, we asked if they could change out her trach for us.
It took a while to get Sadbh to sleep and despite having a higher than normal heart rate, we were eventually able to manage trach care without any issues. She even slept on for an hour and a half afterwards giving Katie and I a well-earned break.

She was in a much better mood when she woke up this time and after a light snack, we all headed up to Capitol Hill for a walk and to get the weekly shopping.
Sadbh really enjoyed being out in the sunshine and the amount of smiles that she generated was incredible. She waved at everyone she passed and received so many compliments.

Later in the evening Suzie and Clodagh stopped by and Sadbh instantly pulled all her toys out so share with Clodagh.

Shortly before bedtime, Sadbh got to Skype with my parents, my sister and her family in New Zealand. She was getting really tired but she recognized my father and was blowing kisses to them all.

Getting Sadbh to bed tonight was rough and just as she drifting off to sleep she looked up to Katie, indicated that she needed to be suctioned and just as Katie was ready to suction she threw up all over.
There was a little bit of panic, however Sadbh was in good spirits and gave me a big smile as I got the suction machine ready.
She is something else, that’s for sure.

We think she is going to have a rough night tonight and we are grateful that Larissa will be here to look after her.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – August 26th, 2012

Sadbh had a lot of secretions through the night and needed suctioning occasionally. She finally woke around 7:30 and was ready for the day to start.
Breakfast was served and Sadbh had yummy blueberry pancakes.

Despite being in a great mood when she woke up, Sadbh was soon quite cranky and very fussy.
She did not have much of an appetite and ended up having a serious temper tantrum.
She seemed quite tired so we thought that trach care might happen early today. It wasn’t the case and Sadbh kept going until noon.
Trach care went quite easily and she slept for almost two hours afterwards.

The weather was kind of funny today so rather than heading out on the lake, we all went for a walk up to Capitol Hill instead.
Sadbh’s mood was much better this time around. She did not want to sit in her stroller and was adamant that she walked without holding anyone’s hand. This was fine until she tripped and fell flat on her face. Thankfully she didn’t have far to go and that she did not cause herself any injury apart from a small bump and a big scare.

We stopped off for lunch along the way and Sadbh was kept entertained by an 8-month girl at the next table. Sadbh was signing like crazy and both girls had a great time.

After we arrived home, it was time to drop Pat off at the airport for her trip to Portland. Sadbh was sad to see her go and gave her a big wave as she got out of the car.

The rest of the evening was spent relaxing and reading her new books.
Just before bedtime Sadbh got to take a bath with Katie and she loved it.
Since she had only one nap today, Sadbh was ready to go to sleep once she was in her pajamas and her teeth were brushed.
Larissa is working tonight and I hope Sadbh gets a good night sleep since she has an important appointment with Dr. Inglis at Children’s Hospital first thing in the morning.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – August 25th, 2012

Sadbh spent most of the night with us and I spent the night sleeping on a strip of the bed that measured no more than 2 inches from the edge. It seemed that every time I would try to gain any extra room, I would be met with a kick or a shove from Sadbh.

She made up for it when I woke up and she leaned over, gave me a kiss and make the baby sign for “I love you daddy”.

Sadbh had a big breakfast and watched her baby signing DVD for a short while. She eventually got bored of the DVD and could not wait to read the new books that she received from Pat. One of the books is about farm animals and it includes a panel that plays the sounds of each of the animals that are featured in the book.
Sadbh loved it and could not put it down.

Trach care came early today as Sadbh was very tired.
She was very restless during trach care and I had to work hard to keep the trach in while Katie cleaned around her neck and stoma site.
After she settled down she managed to sleep on for an hour and a half and woke up in a great mood.

The boat was fixed yesterday and since the weather was fantastic we headed out with Neil and Pat for a couple of hours.
Sadbh was delighted to be on the boat even though she had to wear her life jacket. Once we dropped anchor down by Sewart Park, Sadbh got to run around the boat and play with her toys. She waved at all the other boaters and had the biggest grin on her face.
It was a fun way to spend the day and she did not want to leave when we docked the boat back in the marina.

Later in the evening we headed over to Theresa and Orla’s for dinner and Sadbh got to hang out with all her friends.
As soon as she met Cormac, she immediately tried her best to get a kiss from him. He was obviously playing hard to get, but that did not deter Sadbh. She was more determined than ever and eventually succeeded.
It was a hectic evening for all the kids and most of them ended up staying up long after their bed times.
They all did great and at one point they had Gerry pulling them around the garden in a red wagon.

Sadbh did start to get very tired towards the end and at one point got very cranky.
Her Godfather Derek’s sister, Sandra, was visiting from back in Ireland and Sadbh accidently head butted her. She made up for it moments later when she blew Sandra a few kisses.

Sadbh’s eyes shut tight as soon as she was in her car seat and she slept soundly all the way home.
I’m hoping that she sleeps much better tonight and stays in her cot. That way Katie and I should get a somewhat decent night sleep.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – August 24th, 2012

Sadbh woke up moments after we went to bed and ended up spending a few hours in bed with us.  She went back into her cot around 1am and woke again at 4:30.  After a quick snuggle with Katie, she slept on until 7:30 and it was off downstairs for breakfast.

Nini left for a two-week holiday and Sadbh’s nurse called in sick. Katie took care of the first few hours by staying home with Sadbh.
I headed home from work at 9 to take care of the rest of the day and I arrived to a very happy little girl. As soon as I set foot in the door, she came running through the kitchen and straight into my arms. She was so happy and affectionate it brought a tear to my eye.

As soon as Katie was ready to head off, Ali-Baba arrived to help with trach care. Sadbh had so much energy and did not want to slow down. She moves so fast through the house now, I fear that she’s going to wear a groove in the floor with all the running around.

Her trach care ritual went very well and Sadbh really enjoyed her bath. Ali-Baba read her a couple of books and once she was bundled up in her warm pajamas, she fell into a deep sleep very quickly.
Trach care was very quick, however Sadbh woke up with a huge smile as soon as we placed her in bed.

Katie’s stepmother arrived today and Sadbh was very happy when she arrived. After lunch, Sadbh, Katie and Pat headed off to the local farmers market and came home with beautiful flowers and the makings for tonight’s dinner.

It was a beautiful evening so we all headed over to Alki Beach in West Seattle and Sadbh could not slow down. Despite not having slept for more than 40 minutes all day, she had a serious amount of energy. There were moments where it looked like she was about to fly around the place.

It was tough getting Sadbh to sleep this evening and her mood was all over the place. One moment she was crying and asking for Katie, the next she was kissing and hugging me, and all of a sudden I became her punching bag. After an hour or so she finally fell into a deep sleep. Hopefully she rests well tonight as we have a fun day planned for tomorrow, after we are done with trach care of course.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – August 23rd, 2012

Sadbh slept like a log last night and did not wake until just as Larissa was leaving the house. Katie unhooked her equipment and picked her out of her crib.  As soon as she saw Larissa she immediately blew kisses to her and made the baby sign for thank you.  Not a bad way to end your week’s work.

Sadbh and Katie snuggled upstairs in our room for awhile until Sadbh determined that it was time to go downstairs for breakfast.  Nini was already awake and Sadbh ate toast, bananas and cheese.

Nadia worked today and not long after she arrived it was time for trach care.
Sadbh had a two-hour nap afterwards and once she woke up she was in a great mood and ready for lunch.

Nini had an appointment in the afternoon so Nadia and Sadbh got to spend the rest of the afternoon together and after lunch they headed off up to the park in Madrona.
Sadbh wore her Passy Muir Valve and it seems that every day that she wears it she is louder than the day before.
Nadia realized that when Sadbh struggled with the PMV that a drink of water usually helps her. Thanks to Nadia, Sadbh actually wore her PMV most of the day today and was in her element making sounds.

While Nadia was walking Sadbh home from the park today she heard gunshots a few blocks away and thankfully she realized what was going on and headed home as quickly as possible. Thankfully Nadia had her wits about her and that neither she or Sadbh were in any immediate danger.

Sadbh was in a fantastic mood all evening and was full of energy. Katie and I had a brilliant time playing and chasing her around the house.
By the end of the evening I started tickling her and when I was done she sat down in front of me, laid back on my lap and did the sign for more. She is such a charmer.

Needless to say she was very hyper when it came time for bed so Katie had to work hard to get her to sleep.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – August 22nd, 2012

Sadbh slept well thanks to Larissa. She was a little bit more active than usual but Larissa was able to keep her calm.
When I popped in to see her this morning while heading out to work, Sadbh woke up for a few moments.  She made the sign for mommy and fell back to sleep as soon as I made the sign that mommy was sleeping.

Shortly after Larissa left at 6am, she woke again.  This time mommy was there and after a quick snack and a snuggle, Sadbh slept on for another hour and a half before finally getting up for breakfast.

We originally had her appointment for Botox treatment scheduled for today, so we did not have any nurses scheduled for the day. Since the appointment moved out, Nini was working solo today with help from Ali-Baba when it came time for trach care.

Sadbh was in a much better mood today and wore her Passy Muir Valve for a long time while out for a walk with Nini. Her voice is getting louder and she is certainly making more sounds than ever.

While in the park she started to shout very loudly, so loud in fact that she hurt Nini’s ears. It was a great sound and we hope that she keeps it up.

She had a great day overall and hopefully she will have another good night sleep tonight.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.

Sadbh’s update – August 21st, 2012

Sadbh had a much better night sleep and thankfully her heart rate and blood oxygen level was very stable throughout the night.
She awoke shortly after Larissa’s shift ended and was immediately ready for her breakfast.

Nadia was working with Sadbh today and Sadbh was in for a full day of fun.
Sadbh wore her Passy Muir Valve for almost an hour and her voice got louder and stronger as the time went by.

As soon as she started to get sleepy, Nini and Nadia sprung into action and started her trach care ritual.
Sadbh slept through allowing for an easy trach care, however, she did not sleep for long afterwards.

She had a big lunch after she got up, but her mood was not great. She was quite cranky so Nini and Nadia took her out for a nice long walk.

This did the trick and Sadbh spent most of the time waving at people and once she arrived at the park she even tried to chase a few birds.
Thankfully she fell asleep for 30 minutes on the way home, but it still was not enough.

Despite being very tired, Sadbh had a great evening and was very active. She could not stop playing hide and seek and she rearranged the living room and her bedroom over and over.

When it came time for bed she had no energy left and was fast asleep in no time.

We originally had an appointment for her at Children’s Hospital for tomorrow for another treatment of Botox along with a bronchoscopy and a possible removal of any granuloma build up inside her airway. Her appointment has been moved out to Monday giving us another few days to get ready for it.

All the best,

Wayne, Katie and Sadbh.
